Chapter114
Aubrey’s heart skipped a beat.
There was no joy or excitement, only bewilderment and unease.
Damon’s sudden proposal–was he choosing her over his career?
Or did he just need reassurance?

“Is this because of what your cousin said?” Aubrey didn’t directly answer his proposal, because she couldn’t be the reason his career was ruined. “You don’t have to listen to what your cousin says. He just doesn’t like me and thinks I’m not good enough for you.”
“Bree, this is the third and final time I’ll ask you to marry me. There won’t be a fourth,” Damon said, his voice taking on a rough, heavy quality.
Aubrey nodded, silent.
She knew.
Marriage needed impulsiveness, especially in their situation. It required a reckless abandon. Once they started thinking clearly, the marriage would never happen.
Damon’s gaze was intense as he watched her, waiting for her answer.
She gave him a bitter smile. “Damon, no marriage, but no breaking up either.”
“Do you want kids?”
“No.”
Any child born outside marriage would complicate Damon’s security clearance, jeopardizing his career and potentially impacting the child’s future opportunities if they pursued similar sensitive fields.
Damon turned his head, looking forlornly at the nearby greenery, his eyes darkening as if falling into an endless abyss.
After a moment of silence, he said quietly, “Let’s go back inside for lunch.”
“Okay.” Aubrey got up, walked behind his wheelchair, and pushed him inside.
Stepping into the spacious, bright house, the cool air instantly brought some relief to Aubrey’s overheated body, but her mood remained heavy and
dull.
The two sat down at the table, facing three dishes and a soup.
A gentle breeze drifted in through the window, causing the green leaves on the trees to sway softly, dappling the room with light and shadows.
The atmosphere at the table was quiet. They were close physically, but their hearts felt galaxies apart.
Aubrey didn’t know what the future held.
But right now, she knew Damon was reluctant to let her go, yet being together left him feeling adrift, full of anxiety; being apart felt like a regret, a painful case of unrequited love.
This was the unchangeable reality of their situation.
That night, she helped Damon take a shower.
After his shower, Damon didn’t go back to work. He sat on the bed, planning to read for a while before going to sleep.
Nine o’clock in the evening, in their bedroom.
Aubrey had just finished showering and drying her hair when she received a call from Sierra Vance.
“Bree, I’m in New Haven City. Wanna grab a drink?”
“Didn’t your kid come with you?” Aubrey asked, confused.
Sierra’s voice was choked with emotion. “She’s here.”
“Then who’s watching her?”
“Ryan is.”

“Where are you? Send me the address.”
Hanging up, Aubrey walked to Damon’s door and knocked, a knot of anxiety tightening in her stomach.
“Come in,” Damon’s voice, clear and steady, called out.
Aubrey pushed the door open.

The room was dimly lit by a reading lamp, the air filled with the soothing scent of lavender incense, an aroma that immediately calmed her.
Damon was sitting up in bed, propped against the headboard with a thick pillow behind his back, dressed in light gray pajamas and engrossed in a large book.
In the soft light, he looked effortlessly handsome, gentle, and refined, with a hint of alluring languor.
Seeing her approach, Damon immediately closed the book, a teasing smile playing on his lips. “Coming to join me in bed?”
Aubrey shook her head.
A flicker of disappointment crossed Damon’s face, though his smile remained gentle. “Then what’s up?”
“Sierra’s in New Haven City.”
“I know. You mentioned it earlier today.”
“She just asked me to go out for drinks.”
Damon’s eyes darkened, and he quickly checked the time on his phone. “It’s almost ten. The two of you going out drinking?”
“Yeah.”
“Shouldn’t she be spending time with her husband since she just got here?”
“She sounded upset on the phone, so I’m guessing they had a fight.”
Damon set aside his book and phone, straightening up. “It’s pretty spacious here. Why don’t you invite her over? It’s safer to drink at home, and she can just crash here if she gets too drunk.”
Aubrey thought he made a good point. No place was as quiet and safe as their home.
“Okay, I’ll ask Sierra to come over.” Aubrey turned to leave.
“Bree…” Damon called out softly.
Aubrey turned back. “Yeah?”
“Are you…” Damon paused for a few seconds, his eyes intense, “Just going to leave like that?”
Aubrey looked puzzled. “Huh?”
“Aren’t you forgetting something?”
Aubrey’s mind raced, trying to figure out what she had forgotten.
It wasn’t until Damon beckoned her with a finger that she realized what he meant. Her cheeks flushed slightly, and a shy smile played on her lips.
She walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, placing her hands on his broad shoulders. Leaning in, she tilted her head up and kissed his lips.
The instant her warm, soft lips met his, Aubrey felt a tremor in her heart. Their heated breaths mingled, and she could clearly inhale the faint, clean scent of Damon’s shower gel.
Combined with the lavender fragrance from the room’s diffuser, she felt intoxicated before even taking a sip of alcohol.
Just as she was ending the goodnight kiss, pulling away from his lips.
Suddenly, Damon’s hands snaked around her, his left hand cupping the back of her head, his right hand gripping her waist, pulling her forcefully into his embrace, deepening the kiss with slow, deliberate thrusts of his tongue.
All she wanted was a goodnight kiss.
But Damon seemed intent on devouring her, kissing her with such fervor that she was on the verge of suffocating, her body limp in his arms. She didn’t know how long it lasted, but eventually, she pushed against his broad shoulders, forcibly breaking free from his kiss, panting slightly, her soft voice laced with a hint of flirtatious annoyance, “Wasn’t that supposed to be a goodnight kiss? What do you think you’re doing?”
