Chapter123.
Victoria, her eyes sparkling with a hint of nonchalant composure, delivered what sounded like a gentle yet firm warning: “We all have our share of troublesome children. It’s best to sweep your own doorstep clean before worrying about the frost on someone else’s roof. Damon’s aunts, I thank you on behalf of the younger generation for your concern.”
With that, she took Aubrey’s hand and turned to leave.
The two aunts‘ faces were ashen, clouded with a thick, dark displeasure. They clenched their jaws so hard their teeth almost shattered. Their chests heaved with rage as they glared at Aubrey and Victoria’s retreating figures, unable to utter a single word.
Aubrey couldn’t help but giggle as Victoria led her away.
Victoria turned back to look at her, releasing her hand. She frowned, a hint of helplessness in her expression. “You were just being bullied, and you’re laughing?”
“Thank you, Mrs.,” Aubrey said, her eyes sparkling with a bright smile, a sweet warmth fluttering in her chest.
“Don’t mention it,” Victoria sighed softly. “You’re always so worried that Damon’s relatives, friends, and family won’t like you. You’re afraid it’ll put Damon in an awkward position, so you try to be accommodating. But that just encourages them to take advantage and think they can walk all over you. Next time, don’t hold back. Some people are just better off offended. Leave the mess for Damon to clean up for you.”
“Okay, I understand,” Aubrey replied, nodding with a gentle smile.
Victoria turned around. “Let’s go back and get ready for dinner.”
“Okay,” Aubrey replied, walking back towards the house with her, side by side.
As night fell, the spacious dining room buzzed with life. The large round table was packed with people, and the chef was bringing out steaming dishes. Everyone started drinking, and the atmosphere was lively.
Aubrey sat upright, quietly enjoying her meal, as the lazy susan in the center of the table slowly spun around.
Her fork never strayed far, and her plate was always full of her favorite meats and vegetables. Damon made sure her plate never stayed empty for long.
As Aubrey lowered her head to take another bite, Damon reached out, gathered her long hair, and expertly tied it back.
Aubrey paused, tilting her head to look at him.
Damon’s eyes were calm as he said, unhurried, “It’ll get in your food and get dirty. I’m just tying it up for you.”
At that moment, her heart skipped a beat, a wave of warmth washing over her.
His attentiveness, his focus, always anticipated her needs even before she realized them herself.
Even if he doubted her love, it didn’t diminish his own for her.
“Does he always carry hair ties and tissues with him?” she wondered.
Damon finished tying her hair and picked up his fork, resuming his meal.
Aubrey stared at him for a long moment, then lowered her head, picking up a piece of meat and slowly chewing.
She thought to herself, “Damon’s mother must be incredibly gentle, gracious, and well–mannered to have raised such wonderful children.
The eldest son is righteous, the second son is warm, and the youngest daughter is adorable.
It’s truly enviable.
After dinner, everyone gathered on the front lawn, drinking tea, admiring the moon, and engaging in lively conversation.
Aubrey was pulled back to Tracy’s room, and like long–lost besties, they sat on the bed with pillows in their arms, chatting away happily about everything under the sun.
Tracy, 24, had been a war correspondent for two years, and she shared her observations of various wars and the hardships of people abroad with Aubrey.
She also enjoyed listening to Aubrey talk about the myriad aspects of life, legal cases, especially bizarre and unconventional events.
Time flew by, and before they knew it, it was already 11:30 PM.
A knock sounded on the door.

Tracy quickly got out of bed and ran to open the door, and only then did Aubrey pick up her one to check the time
The moment she opened the door, Tracy saw Damon in black pajamas standing outside, and without a word, she immediately tried to close the door.
Damon stopped the door with his hand, frowning at her, “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Tracy squeezed out a smile, her eyebrows curving sweetly, her voice sugary, “Damon, let Aubrey sleep with me tonight, we still have so much to talk
ibout.”
Jamon scoffed, calling her by her full name, “Tracy Blackwood, how many hours has it been since dinner?”
Tracy put one hand on her hip, tilted her chin, and wore a disgruntled expression. “You’re with Aubrey all the time, and you get to hold her every night. What’s wrong with letting her sleep with me for one night?”
When do I hold her every night?” Damon retorted.
Tracy paused, turning her head to look at Aubrey.
Aubrey’s cheeks flushed, and she guiltily and awkwardly avoided eye contact, gazing elsewhere.
Six years ago, Tracy used to try to steal her away from her brother like this, but Tracy was young then. She didn’t expect her to still be like this now that
he’s older.
Aubrey felt caught in the middle, embarrassed and unsure of what to do.
Tracy smiled helplessly, sighed, and shook her head, looking at her brother with his leg injury.
Just tonight.”
No.”
Rock, paper, scissors.”
No.”
That’s too much, Damon. Aubrey isn’t just yours.”
You lied to her, telling her about my suicide attempt. I haven’t settled that score with you yet. Do you want to see something even more excessive?”
Tracy grinned guiltily, quickly pulling the door open and turning to look at Aubrey. “Aubrey, it’s late. You should go back to your room and rest with my brother.”
Aubrey immediately got out of bed, put on her shoes, and walked out with her phone.
Passing Tracy, Aubrey whispered, “Good night, Tracy.”
Tracy puffed out her cheeks, muttering, “Good night,” before rolling her eyes at Damon.
Damon frowned at her childishness. “Are you still a kid? You’re old enough to get married. Stop fighting over your sister–in–law. And the eye–rolling? Seriously?”
Younger than you,” Tracy retorted, wrinkling her nose at him, and slammed the door shut.
Damon chuckled, amused and exasperated.
Aubrey looped her arm through Damon’s, smiling gently. “Let’s go. Let’s go to bed.”
Damon turned to Aubrey, his dark eyes filled with a hint of helplessness. “You don’t want to sleep with me either?”
“No, that’s not true!” Aubrey immediately straightened up, her voice earnest. “I very much want to sleep with you. You’re my husband. If I don’t sleep with you, who am I going to sleep with?”
Damon turned and headed toward their room, Aubrey supporting him, matching his pace.
“It didn’t seem like you wanted to come back to the room at all.”
“Tracy wouldn’t let me.”
“What were you two so engrossed in?”
“Everything. Work, life, gossip, celebrities, even what good movies are out right now.”
“You girls have such interesting topics. You never talk to me about any of that.”

“Well, you’re not a girl”
Damon chuckled, not responding.

Back in their room, Damon set his crutches aside and settled into the king–size bed, reading as he waited for her.
Aubrey grabbed her pajamas and headed to the bathroom to wash up.
Forty minutes later, she emerged with her long hair dry, walked to the bed, pulled back the light comforter, and climbed in. Turning her head, she peered at the book in Damon’s hands. “What are you reading?”
“A novel.” Damon held up the cover for her to see–Brothers by Cormac Ward.
“You like to read novels?” Aubrey leaned closer, trying to get a glimpse of the pages.
“I’ll read just about anything.” Damon’s gaze shifted from the book to her flushed cheeks, his senses filling with the pleasant, clean scent of her soap. His eyes grew warmer. “Besides, you were in the shower for so long. If I didn’t have a book, I don’t know how I would have passed the time.”
Aubrey didn’t notice his gaze; she was too focused on the words in the book, her cheeks growing even hotter. “Is it always this graphic?” Damon closed the book, cool and collected. “Novels aren’t always pure. They can be explicit. Whatever form the content and words take, there’s value in it.”
“Mm.” Aubrey tilted her head back, meeting Damon’s smoldering gaze.
His Adam’s apple bobbed, his breathing turned shallow, and he slowly raised his hand, touching her delicate, pale cheek. His fingertips gently traced the curve of her rosy lips, his voice laced with desire, a rough, husky murmur. “If we weren’t at your grandfather’s, I’d really want to sleep with you.”
Aubrey smiled shyly. “You’re still injured. Don’t think about that.”
“You’re not injured. You can move.”
“You really want to?”
“Yeah.”
“Now?”
Damon shook his head, a helpless smile tugging at his lips. “No protection. Not safe. Not appropriate at your grandfather’s house. And I’m afraid you wouldn’t be able to relax.”
Aubrey giggled, kneeling up to loop her arms around his neck, pressing a kiss to his forehead. “You always have such good self–control. Don’t let your mind wander just because you’re injured. We can wait until you’re feeling better. We have all the time in the world. No need to rush.”
Damon closed his eyes, not saying a word, exhaling a frustrated, hot breath.
After kissing his forehead, Aubrey turned off her bedside lamp, then lay down, pulling the covers up. “Good night.”
Seeing how quickly she settled in, Damon put his book away and switched off his own lamp, slowly shifting his body to lie down.
In the pitch–black room, they lay side–by–side, their shoulders touching, their breathing steady, the air conditioner keeping the temperature just right. It was quiet and comfortable.
After a moment, Damon spoke, his magnetic voice light and gentle.
‘Bree, is there anything you’re keeping from me?”
