Her gaze wavered, and Aubrey lowered her eyes, avoiding his deep, burning stare. Damon’s love was too profound, too weighty for her. She wasn’t sure she could ever love him the way he loved her.

They had different ways of loving.

Damon was a passionate pursuer, while she was a hesitant avoider.

Ryan shot to his feet when he saw her. Aubrey, where’s Sierra? Can I see her? I know I messed up, I really do.

Aubrey looked up at Ryan and walked over, saying, Sierra doesn’t want to see you. I’m her lawyer now, so you can relay anything you want through me. She’s only accepting a divorce by agreement or a divorce lawsuit. Think carefully

Before she could finish, Ryan roared, I won’t get a divorce! My child is so young. How can she be so cruel as to let our child lose their home and become a kid from a broken family?

Aubrey scoffed. Isn’t that what your cruelty caused? How is it Sierra’s fault?

I didn’t cheat, I didn’t betray our family, and I didn’t do anything wrong! Why is she being so stubborn? Does she really want this to end in divorce?Ryan choked out.

Aubrey remained calm. I remember when you two first got married, Sierra liked watching suggestive videos of guys online. You were so angry about ir back then, and you two had a huge fight. You even came to my house to confront me about it. Have you forgotten?

Ryan fell silent, hanging his head without a word.

Aubrey gave a bitter laugh, clenching her hands into fists. Because you were unhappy, Sierra deleted all her short video apps and gave up her guilty pleasure. And you? After she gave birth, you became reckless, ignoring her feelings, dismissing her needs. Did you think that after a woman gets married and has a child, she’s trapped? That she’d be stuck in a miserable marriage, letting you walk all over her?

I didn’t ignore her feelings, I just couldn’t understand

Aubrey cut him off. Couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t stay in Crestview City to take care of your mother, or why she couldn’t tolerate you being just friendswith your ex, right?

Ryan nodded again.

You don’t need to understand. Someone like you isn’t suited for marriage, and you don’t deserve Sierra’s love.Aubrey said, walking over to Damon and looking down at him.

Damon took her cold, pale hand, rubbing it gently in his palm. Is Buddy asleep?

Aubrey’s face lit up with a happy smile at the mention of Buddy. Yes, he is.

She adored Sierra’s son, Buddy, who was just over six months old. His chubby cheeks looked like two rosy, soft buns, and his profile resembled a little cartoon character, making you want to give him a peck.

Buddy loved to smile, his grin revealing two tiny white teeth. His eyelashes were long and thick, and when he smiled, his eyes turned into two crescentshaped lines..

He wasn’t shy and let anyone hold him, never crying or fussing.

Even Damon, watching from a distance, found the adorable child endearing.

Damon said, I had some toys delivered. They’ve been washed and sanitized, and they’re in the laundry room. You can give them to Buddy to play with omorrow morning.

Aubrey nodded. Okay, I’ll give them to him tomorrow and tell him they’re from his uncle.

It’s late. Let’s go to bed,Damon said, releasing her hand. He turned to look at Ryan, who was still inside, his tone turning colder. I won’t see you out. You can find your own way.

Ryan covered his face and collapsed onto the couch, overcome with anguish.

Aubrey wheeled Damon toward the veranda in the courtyard.

The night was hazy, and the view beyond the courtyard faded into darkness. Soft, amber lights illuminated the entire veranda, creating a vintage, warm atmosphere.

A gentle breeze stirred as she wheeled him along in silence, each lost in their own thoughts.

As they neared his room, Damon called out to her, Bree

Aubrey stopped, looking down at the top of his dark head. Hmm?

Damon fell silent again.

After a moment of waiting, when he didn’t continue, she moved around to his side, sitting on the wooden bench beside the corridor, meeting his gaze at the same level. What’s wrong?

Are you tired?Damon turned to look at her.

Aubrey shook her head.

It’s actually still quite early. I just didn’t want to waste any more time listening to Ryan’s bullshit. I didn’t really want to sleep yet

Aubrey smiled knowingly.

Slowly, Damon reached out, taking her hand in his. Keep me company. Let’s just sit here for a while.

She nodded, lowering her gaze to watch his large hand caress her fingers, a strange melancholy settling over her heart. Okay.

I see how much you like kids,Damon said, his voice dropping slightly. Maybe we could

No,Aubrey interrupted immediately, knowing what he was about to suggest. There are a lot of things I like, but that doesn’t mean I have to have them all.”

Damon’s mood seemed to darken, his voice a soft murmur. What you said to RyanI heard it, too.”

What did I say?Aubrey asked, looking at him curiously.

A sudden wave of memory washed over her, cold as a mountain breeze, sharp as sunlight reflecting off tears. She felt as though she’d cried more tears since first meeting Ryan than in her entire life.

Aubrey knew Damon wouldn’t believe anything she said anymore. She didn’t offer any promises, just a small, tightlipped smile.

Life, she thought, even if spent together out of love, would always carry a tinge of regret without marriage or children.

It was an imperfect kind of longing.

Like Damon, she felt a void deep within her heart, an emptiness that never seemed to fade.

She reached out and clasped Damon’s handsome hand in both of hers, feeling the distinct bones, the rough yet elegant length, and the warm, reassuring strength within his grip.

An inexplicable wave of oppression washed over her once more. A small twinge of sadness had stirred up a storm in her heart. She couldn’t control the grief; for some reason, she just felt so incredibly sad.

Depression had a way of magnifying the tiniest speck of negativity, a mere mote of dust, ten thousand times over, drowning out any positive emotion. It was an uncontrollable sorrow.

She had Damon, and she knew he loved her deeply, so why did she still feel this profound sadness?

Aubrey slid off the bench and knelt at his feet, taking his warm hands and pressing them to her cheeks. She leaned against his legs, burying her face in the space between his hand and thigh, closing her eyes and taking deep breaths, desperately trying to suppress the sadness in her heart.

Damon looked down at her, kneeling and leaning against his legs so suddenly. He asked softly, Bree, what’s wrong?

Aubrey didn’t dare answer, her throat already choked with emotion. She shook her head, tears welling up in her eyes.
