Alex shrugged, feigning innocence.“I didn’t mean anything by it. My lawyer fainted in court, so wasn’t it my responsibility to bring you back for treatment? Besides, my medical team is the best in the country. Hospital doctors are always rushing around, barely spending three minutes with each patient. My team is far more thorough.”
Aubrey bit her lip, glaring at him, her anger boiling.
Not knowing what Alex was up to, she slipped on her shoes, grabbed her bag, and hurried out.
Alex quickly followed, chasing after her.“The doctor said you’re weak. You should stay here and rest properly…”
Aubrey ignored him, striding down the stairs. As she passed the living room, she saw Skylar sitting on the couch, playing a game.
Skylar looked up, a faint sneer on her face.“Aubrey Hayes, I shouldn’t be surprised! After all these years, you still love playing both sides. It used to be Damon and Ethan, and now it’s Damon and my brother.”
Aubrey didn’t want to deal with her. But when she saw the man walking in through the front door, she stopped dead in her tracks, her body frozen,
Skylar followed her gaze, leaping to her feet, tossing her phone aside, and beaming,“Damon…”
Alex, who had just rushed downstairs, also saw Damon Blackwood entering in a wheelchair by the door. He stopped in his tracks, a smile playing on his ips.
The orange–red glow of the setting sun enveloped Damon as he wheeled himself in, silhouetted against the light.
The sleeves of his white shirt were rolled up twice, revealing strong, powerful forearms with faintly visible veins. His knuckles, pale and hardened,
ripped the wheelchair handles. His handsome face was shadowed, his gaze clear and cold.
Damon, you’re here?” Alex said casually.“Aubrey just woke up. Perfect timing.”
Aubrey’s heart clenched at his words, realizing that he had been the one to call Damon.
Did Alex realize that there was still a rift between her and Damon?
Vas he deliberately trying to get under Damon’s skin?
Had Damon heard the nasty things Skylar had said?
or the past ten days, she had been working herself to the bone, neglecting Damon in the process.
Damon already felt insecure and didn’t trust her. Seeing her wake up in Alex’s house now, would he misunderstand?
Light now, Aubrey was a mess of nerves, her mind racing with anxious thoughts.
Jamon stopped his wheelchair a few feet away, his gaze softening as he looked at Aubrey.“What happened? Why did you faint? Are you not feeling
vell
Aubrey glanced down, shaking her head.“I’m fine. Probably just low blood sugar.”
Alex cut in, “It wasn’t just low blood sugar. My medical team checked her out. She’s run down and a little malnourished. A top specialist ran some tests. le said she’s suffering from Severe Stress Cardiomyopathy and extreme emotional exhaustion. Said her family needs to pay close attention.”
Aubrey anxiously gripped the hem of her shirt, her palms growing clammy.
Alex shook his head “She’s weak.”
ust then, Skylar walked over, positioning herself between Aubrey and Damon, a saccharine smile plastered on her face. “Damon, long time no see! How’s your leg doing?”
Damon glanced at her, his tone polite but distant.“Thank you for asking.”
Then, turning his attention to Aubrey, his voice softened, “Bree, let’s go home.”
Aubrey stepped forward, reaching out to take hold of his wheelchair, but he was already wheeling himself away
Her hand hung in the air for several seconds, watching his retreating figure. A heavy weight settled in her chest, her spirits plummeting as she hurried to :atch up.
Outside the villa gates, the valet driver was waiting by the car.
Damon approached, and the driver immediately opened the car door.

Aubrey moved to assist him, but before her hand could touch him, he was already bracing himself against the door frame, sliding into the back seat.
In that instant, her heart seemed to plummet into an abyss, sinking lower and lower, leaving her with a sense of exhaustion and helplessness. With heavy steps, she walked around to the other side of the car and got in.
Dusk deepened, and traffic crawled.
The car joined the long, red river of taillights ahead, the interior of the car dim and silent.
Damon sat rigidly in his seat, his expression cold and detached, not uttering a word.
Aubrey leaned wearily against the window, gazing at the cityscape outside, her mind racing, trying to figure out how to start, how to explain.
Vas he not going to ask? Or initiate any conversation?
The atmosphere in the car was stifling, and Aubrey felt like she was struggling to breathe.
Half an hour later, the car pulled into Blackwood Crescent.
The driver got the wheelchair from the trunk. Damon, supporting himself on the door, transferred into the chair. He ended the ride, and the driver hanked him before pulling away.
athed in the warm glow of the courtyard lights, Aubrey stood quietly beside Damon, gazing at his cold, hard profile. Her fingers nervously twisted the trap of her purse, a heavy weight pressing on her chest, making it hard to breathe.
Damon…” Aubrey began, breaking the silence.“Don’t get the wrong idea. Alex and I, we’re just working together. There’s nothing…”
hat wasn’t what he wanted to hear, Damon didn’t wait for her to finish, wheeling himself inside.
Watching Damon’s coldness felt like a scythe tearing through her heart.
I wasn’t like she had willingly gone to Alex’s house. Did he really have to misunderstand her like this?
he stood there, unable to suppress the sadness, tears silently streaming down her face.
he pain was amplified, even though it wasn’t her fault. A wave of negative emotions crashed over her, and another angry, mournful voice echoed in
