Chapter138
“Do you still have court this afternoon?” Damon asked, holding her waist with one arm while using the other to steer the wheelchair towards the dining
room.
Aubrey nestled closer to him.“Yes, the Vance Corp chemical plant environmental pollution case. It’s a live–streamed public hearing, and I’m feeling a bit stressed.”
“Is it because someone reported it under their real name, and it went viral, attracting a lot of public attention and scrutiny, that they’re doing a live broadcast of the hearing?”
Yeah.”
Damon gently pinched her soft cheek.“My Bree is about to become famous.”
Aubrey pushed his hand away, rubbing her cheek where he’d pinched it. “It’s not a guaranteed win. If I lose, people might think I took money from Vance Corp, that I was bribed.”
I believe in the law, and I believe in you. You’ll win.”
Aubrey got off his lap and sat in a dining chair. “If I win, I’m treating your brother to dinner. Without him, there’s no way I could have gotten my hands on the evidence of the factory dumping waste.”
What platform is the livestream on? I want to watch it at home.”
Aubrey immediately pulled out her phone, opening the official platform.“Here, it starts at three.”
I’ve never seen you at work before. I’ll definitely watch.” Damon’s gaze was intense, his smile gentle.
Aubrey smiled knowingly.
The housekeeper came out with lunch and set it on the table.
They ate lunch, discussing the details of the case.
After lunch, Aubrey hurriedly left the house to go to work.
Damon had scheduled a visit from a renovation contractor to rearrange the layout of their room. He also had their housekeeper replace the bedsheets and covers, even changing the curtains to Aubrey’s favorite color.
No sooner had the contractor left than a salesperson from a high–end department store arrived, filling her vanity with expensive products.
After taking care of the room, he interviewed several yoga instructors at home, ultimately hiring a gentle and mild–mannered woman.
At precisely three o’clock, he switched on the TV, navigated to the court’s official livestream, and settled into his wheelchair to watch the proceedings.
On the television screen, he saw a different Aubrey Hayes.
It was a side of her he had never witnessed before.
Aubrey was dressed in a crisp white blouse and a gray skirt suit, exuding an an air of poised elegance and grace.
Seated at the plaintiff’s table, she was the epitome of composure, rationality, and steadiness, radiating a professional edge tempered with a gentle femininity. With airtight logic, sharp intellect, and irrefutable evidence, she advanced her case methodically, shining brightly in the courtroom.
Damon was captivated.
The Aubrey he knew was gentle, delicate, and stoic.
He never imagined she could be so radiant and confident in court, and no one would ever guess she suffered from depression
Just then, footsteps approached.
Damon turned to see Evan, dressed in a suit and tie, sauntering in with his hands in his pocketa
Everyone in the family had access to his place, so Evan’s sudden visit didn’t surprise him much. He greeted him politely, “Evan Evan smiled affably, his eyes landing on the TV screen in front of him. “Watching your woman fight a lawsuit, huh?”
“Yeah.” Damon looked back at the screen, fixated “Is there something you need?”
“Just came to give you a heads–up. Your woman is showing off too much, not a good thing “Evan stood beside him, watching the courtroom scene on TV, a faint smile playing on his lips.“After this lawsuit, Aubrey Hayes will be famous nationwide. This case that no lawyer dared to take, she was

Damon’s face darkened, his tone frosty. “Evan, I don’t understand the political games, and I don’t interfere. I’m just an aerospace engineer. If my woman is stepping on your toes, then I suggest you watch yourself lately. Don’t let her catch you, or even I won’t be able to save you.”
Evan scoffed, turning to Damon. The way you say that, it’s grating on my ears.”
Damon’s gaze was deep as he said, each word distinct, “The legal representative of Vance Corp is your mistress. The money goes into your pocket, yet you remain untouched. When trouble comes, you push your mistress out to take the fall.”
“Weren’t you saying you don’t understand or interfere with the ways of the government?” Evan’s face was cold as ice.
“That’s right, I don’t interfere, but this involves my woman, and I won’t stand idly by.” Damon calmly turned his wheelchair, went to the tea cabinet, opened a drawer, and tossed a file onto the coffee table.“Take a look.”
Evan picked up the file and flipped through it. The more he read, the darker his expression became. He slammed it shut, grinding his teeth as he glared
at Damon.
“You came here hoping I’d persuade my woman to back off, but right now, I just want to advise you to restrain yourself. I don’t fight battles unprepared.”
“I underestimated you, Damon.” Evan angrily threw the file onto the coffee table, his eyes dark and cold. He stormed out.
Damon watched him leave, his voice sharp with warning.“Don’t touch Aubrey, or I’ll take you down, even if you are my cousin.”
Evan paused, stopping in his tracks, frozen still.
After a few seconds, Evan turned back, a smile playing on his lips, his eyes glinting with a sinister light.“I have more lovers than I can count, losing one wouldn’t mean much. But you, you only have Aubrey Hayes. Who’s more afraid of losing, I wonder?”
Damon’s eyes darkened.
“Little brother, one is simply not enough. You’ll have to keep a close eye on her, wouldn’t want anything…unfortunate to happen.” Evan chuckled dryly, then strode away.
Damon gripped the handles of his wheelchair, his knuckles bone–white.
Evening fell.
Damon sat on the mahogany sofa in the living room, watching a video on his phone of Aubrey leaving the courthouse, surrounded by reporters clamoring for her attention.
Outside, he heard the sound of a car pulling into the driveway. He switched off his phone, waiting quietly for Aubrey to come in.
Soon, her voice preceded her arrival.
“Damon, I won!…” Aubrey’s voice was clear and vibrant with excitement, full of cheerful energy. Her slender figure burst through the doorway, her face radiant with a sweet smile.
Before Damon could react, Aubrey tossed her bag aside, straddled his lap, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck, and buried her face in his broad shoulder, embracing him wholeheartedly.
Aubrey’s sudden hug was solid, strong, and unrestrained.
His hands froze in mid–air, stunned for a moment, his heart rate spiking as his senses were filled with her familiar scent.
It had been so long so long since she had embraced him with such fervor.
Coming to his senses, he tightened his arms around her soft, slender waist, burying his face in her floral scented hair, murmuring, “I saw a I saw it all. You were professional, amazing. You secured significant compensation for the residents and put those responsible behind bars.”
“They discharged sixty thousand tons of industrial hydrochloric acid contaminated wastewater! It’s deadly, and they’re appealing the verdict. This case is far from over.”
“You won the first trial. The second won’t change much.” Damon stroked her slender waist, turning his head to kiss her hair. “Are you done for the day?”
“Yes.”
“Don’t take on so many cases for the rest of the time. Give me some of your time.”
