I’m not pregnant.Aubrey stammered, desperate to deny it, pausing for a few seconds before a seed of doubt sprouted within heram 12

Damon pulled out his phone, rising from the table. He walked onto the balcony, already dialing.

Aubrey’s heart pounded in her chest, her eyes anxiously fixed on his retreating figure as her hand tentatively rested on her flat stomach.

She didn’t want to be pregnant. A pregnancy would make things so much harder for Damon.

But she also adored children. If she really was pregnant, how could she ever give up the baby?

The mere thought made her ache inside.

Her anxious heart felt like a stone dragging her down into the ocean, a suffocating sensation that threatened to drown her.

She didn’t know who Damon was calling, but he looked serious and tense.

Damon returned to the table after his call, placing his phone down. His tone was gentle as he said, Eat up.

Aubrey had lost her appetite.Who were you calling?

A doctor.

Huh?Aubrey frowned, her eyes searching his.

you over.

Damon placed a portion of shredded pork in her bowl.I’ve asked the doctor to come and check

Aubrey nodded, her gaze lowered to the food in her bowl, her mind a whirlwind of conflicting emotions.

Damon put down his fork and took Aubrey’s icy hand in his.Don’t be nervous.

Aubrey felt a sheen of sweat on his warm palm. Wasn’t he the one who should be nervous?

As soon as they finished eating, the doctor arrived.

She’d expected a Western doctor, and that’s exactly who arriveda kindfaced OBGYN, Dr. Lee, Damon had called for an urgent house call.

In the living room, Dr. Lee used a portable ultrasound and after a brief examination, gave a gentle, benevolent smile. Congratulations to you both. You’re expecting.

In that instant, Aubrey felt like the sky had fallen. A wave of guilt washed over her, and her heart ached.

Because of her carelessness, her overconfidence that she wouldn’t get pregnant during her safe period, she had now hurt Damon, and the child in her womb.

She felt dazed, her mind blank, unable to hear anything.

Damon was talking to Dr. Lee, but she couldn’t make out a single word, lost in her own terrifying delusion, as if her soul had left her body, her whole heart empty.

Dr. Lee gave a few instructions about prenatal care, recommended some prenatal vitamins, and then left.

Damon saw the doctor out, then came back in. His steps were light, his face radiant with a smile, his excitement palpable.

When Damon returned to the living room, he found Aubrey sitting there, head bowed and tears streaming down her face. Her slender shoulders slumped, and her entire aura seemed defeated.

His heart clenched, and he rushed over to her, dropping to one knee in front of her. He took her cold, delicate hands in his, rubbing them in his palms a: he gazed into her tear-

arfilled eyes, murmuring anxiously, Bree, what’s wrong? Why are you crying?

I’m sorry, Damon, I’m so sorryIt’s all my fault. The more Aubrey thought about it, the sadder she became, overwhelmed with guilt. She’d gotten herself into this mess, and now what was she supposed to do?

She didn’t want to be pregnant, didn’t want to put Damon in a difficult position, and certainly didn’t want to jeopardize his career or face societal judgment that could complicate the child’s future.

But if this baby was really coming, she couldn’t bring herself to have an abortion. This was her and Damon’s first child, and she couldn’t bear to do it, she just couldn’t.

What was she going to do?

Damon reached out, gently caressing her cheek and wiping away her tears with his thumb, murmuring with heartfelt tenderness, Don’t say you’re

sorry. I don’t like hearing you say that

I didn’t expect this. IAubrey closed her eyes, her heart pounding erratically in her chest. Her body trembled slightly as tears streamed down her face. The combination of suppressed emotions and pregnancy hormones made it impossible to control herself. Her voice broke as she sobbed, Damon, I’m so sorry. I’m sorry to you, and I’m sorry to the baby

Her repeated apologies sent Damon into a frenzy. The word triggered something in him, a trauma response. He gripped her arms tightly, his tone harper than before. Aubrey Hayes, what do you want from me?

Aubrey squeezed her eyes shut, biting her lip to stifle the sobs that threatened to erupt, but the tears flowed uncontrollably.

She felt lost and overwhelmed, her mind a jumbled mess of fear. She was terrified that Damon would tell her to go to the hospital and have an abortion, ind the thought sent a wave of pain crashing over her.

Sorrywas all she could say. She didn’t know what else to do.

What do you want?Damon asked again, his voice laced with anger.

He knew this side of Aubrey all too well.

Every time she broke up with him, she was like this, overwhelmed with sadness and pain, crying and apologizing over and over again.

To this day, the mere sound of her crying, apologizing, and saying I’m sorrysent shivers down his spine and twisted his gut.

He hated those words, and he hated the outcome they always brought.

Damon tilted his head back, slowly exhaling the frustration from his chest. He lowered his other knee, kneeling before Aubrey, his reddened eyes ;listening with moisture as he gazed at her. His voice was hoarse and low, laced with a humble plea, Bree, I’m begging you, please don’t be so cruel. Give me a chance to be a father. The child is innocent.

Aubrey froze, slowly lifting her gaze to meet Damon’s. Her tearfilled eyes were wide with disbelief.

Damon’s nasal passages felt blocked. He sniffled, then bent over to press his forehead against the back of her hand on her thigh, his voice hoarse and choked as he murmured with difficulty, I promise I’ll be a good dad.
