Chapter 196: Fast Asleep in His Arms
aybe she was just exhausted.
ubrey fell asleep almost as soon as she lay down. She was so out of it that she barely heard what Damon was saying. His voice was just a blur as she ifted off into a deep sleep.
amon saw her back was still. Her breathing was steady. He leaned over, propping his elbow on the mattress. He lowered his face right above her cheek
peek at her eyes.
er eyes stayed shut, her body completely relaxed. Even with him hovering right over her, she didn’t stir at all.
nce he was sure she was asleep, Damon’s gaze softened. A faint, relieved smile played on his lips. The heavy weight that had been crushing his chest or so long finally vanished. He let out a long, deep breath.
I that mattered was Aubrey’s health.
o eat well, to fall asleep the second her head hit the pillow, to smile in the sun and feel the breeze… to love and hate with everything she had. That was ue happiness, wasn’t it?
is fingertips lightly brushed a stray hair from her cheek, tucking it behind her shoulder to reveal her pale, beautiful face. His Adam’s apple bobbed. A irge of heat pooled in his chest. He wanted to press his body against hers, to kiss her, to touch her.
e fought down every urge. He reached out with a light touch and clicked off her bedside lamp. He dragged his pillow toward the center of the bed and y down right next to her. At this distance, the sweet scent of her hair filled his senses.
wo separate blankets were between them, but they couldn’t stop the ache in his body.
e couldn’t touch her. He didn’t want to wake her, and he definitely didn’t want to scare her.
e lay there behind her, his fingers barely brushing through her silky, dark hair.
was almost too much to handle. He pulled a lock of her hair to his face and inhaled deeply, taking in that familiar, clean scent. He missed the way her oft body felt against him. A sudden wave of heat surged through him.
le needed to sleep. If he stayed awake any longer, he’d lose his mind.
le turned and clicked off his own lamp before settling back down, lying on his side right behind Aubrey’s back.
le closed his eyes, but her scent was in every breath. His mind was a blur of her smile, her voice, her body….
he was so soft, like a cloud. It was agonizing.
lis racing thoughts didn’t stop just because he was tired. After a while, he felt Aubrey roll over. She burrowed right into his arms.
le had finally been about to drift off, but the sudden contact brought him right back to reality.
lis body went stiff. He lifted his arm and looked down. Through the dim, hazy darkness, he saw Aubrey burrowing into his chest. She found a omfortable spot and drifted off.
he was soft in his arms, smelling faint and sweet.
le let out a low chuckle. He lowered his arm and rested it on her waist. He tilted his head back and took a deep breath, trying to kill the urge rising
nside him.
When he moved his head, Aubrey shifted too. Her face and lips were pressed almost right against his Adam’s apple.
Her warm, steady breath hit his neck. A tingling sensation shot through his entire body. He went from hot and tight to stiff and shaking. The heat built up until he felt like he was about to snap. It was eating him alive.
His Adam’s apple was his weakest spot. This was absolute torture.
Desire crawled over him like a thousand ants. They burrowed into his skin, an unbearable itch he couldn’t scratch.
There was no way he was getting any sleep tonight.
Outside, the night was still and beautiful. A cold wind kicked up the fallen leaves, sending them swirling under the dim yellow glow of the streetlights.
The next morning.
The temperature had plummeted. Feeling the chill, Aubrey huddled closer to the warmth beside her. Then she froze. Her sleepiness vanished in an instant Her eyes snapped open.

She blinked her blurry eyes at the light gray fabric right in front of her. As her senses flooded back, she realized she was plastered against Damon’s
chest.
Her heart hammered against her ribs. Her breath hitched, turning hot and heavy. She tried to pull away, moving with agonizing slowness, only to realize his arm was hooked firmly around her waist.
She swallowed hard. Slowly, she reached out and pinched his pajama sleeve, lifting his heavy hand just enough to scoot back. Inch by inch, she crawled out of his embrace.
Once she’d put some distance between them, she held her breath and gently lowered Damon’s hand back down. She stole a glance at his face. He didn’t
even stir.
She sat up slowly, looking at their position on the bed.
They were both right in the middle. Somehow, she had gravitated toward him in her sleep, seeking out his warmth. She had slept so soundly.
Her mind might not remember him, but her body was far too familiar with his touch. It was terrifying how easily she’d fallen into his rhythm.
Aubrey got out of bed, shivering as the morning chill hit her. She slid into her slippers and reached for her blanket, but stopped when she noticed how thin Damon’s covers were. She carefully draped her own blanket over him, then grabbed her pillow and slipped out of the room like a ghost.
The moment the door clicked shut, Damon’s eyes snapped open. He reached out, his fingers brushing the fabric of the blanket she’d left behind. A faint
mile played on his lips.
He’d been awake for a while. He only stayed still to save her the embarrassment.
Back in her own room, Aubrey freshened up and changed into a casual apricot–colored sweater. She tied her long hair back into a neat ponytail and headed down to the dining room.
Chase and Tracy were already there, halfway through their breakfast.
Morning. Dad. Morning, Tracy, Aubrey greeted them politely.
Morning. Chase replied with a nod.
Tracy looked up, curious. “Morning, Aubrey. You’ve got the day off–why are you up so early?”
I wanted to get some reading in,” Aubrey said, sitting down and scooping herself a bowl of multigrain porridge. “I’m hoping to get back to work as oon as possible.
The table was loaded with a variety of breakfast options.
Along with the porridge, there were meat buns, dumplings, brown sugar sponge cakes, hard–boiled eggs, and pieces of steamed corn and sweet potato.
I was simple and healthy.
That was the Blackwood way. No matter how much money or power they had, they never went in for flashy displays or excess.
Tracy gave her a knowing smirk. ‘So, Aubrey, how’d you sleep last night?”
Pretty well.” Aubrey picked up her spoon and started on her porridge. Her ears felt a little warm, but she kept her cool. She wasn’t some ighteen–year–old girl anymore; she didn’t blush that easily. Besides, she and Damon had just… slept. Nothing had actually happened.
Is Damon up yet? Tracy asked.
Not yet.
Worn out, was he? Tracy’s tone was heavy with implication.
Aubrey frowned and shot her a look, then glanced at Chase. She was trying to tell Tracy to stop being so suggestive with their father sitting right there.
Tracy just grinned and bit into a piece of corn, her eyes still dancing with mischief as she watched Aubrey
Nothing had even happened, but Tracy’s staring was making it awkward
Aubrey wanted to snap, We didn’t do anything!
But she knew there was no point.
Aubrey, Chase asked suddenly, when are you planning to go back to work?”

Aubrey gave him her full attention. “Damon has the next few days off,” she replied respectfully. “I figured I’d wait until he’s back at work before I start
That’s good. You two need to work on your relationship.” Chase paused, realizing that wasn’t quite right. “Well, his feelings for you are fine. It’s *your* feelings for him that need some work.”
Aubrey pressed her lips into a tight smile and nodded awkwardly. “Right.”
Chase’s expression hardened as if something had just crossed his mind. “Your Aunt Hannah called last night. She said you were stirring the pot between Evan and Nina right in front of Grandpa. They got into a massive fight because of you, and now she wants an explanation from me. Is that true?”
“Even if you stripped naked and begged me, I still wouldn’t touch you!”
That cold, familiar voice cut straight through me like a knife….
