Do You Still Love Me When We Meet Again? (Aubrey and Damon) novel Chapter 199

y looked down at his hand. Let me go. I need to go apologize to my dad and tell them not to move out.

It’s not about who’s right or wrong. Don’t apologize just because he’s your father,Damon said. He pulled her back toward the dining table and eased her into her chair, then took the seat next to her. Eat your breakfast first.

But they’re leaving, Damon.

They were never supposed to live here permanently. They only moved in to take care of you while you were pregnant.

Guilt gnawed at Aubrey’s heart. That makes it even worse. We can’t just let them leave over one argument. It’s wrong of us.

Damon reached over, pressing his hand against her thigh to keep her from getting up. It’s not over the top. If you give in today, you’ll have to give in tomorrow, and the day after that. It’s a cycle, and you’ll be the one who ends up miserable. I’d rather distance ourselves from those fake relatives and just live our lives. Taking care of our own little homethat’s what matters most.

Our own little home?Aubrey looked at him, her eyes searching his.

Damon gave a faint smile. Just you and me. And maybe our baby down the road.

Aubrey felt a flush creep up her neck. Her heart gave a soft flutter. She didn’t know how to respond, so she just straightened her back and focused on her bowl of porridge.

His hand was still resting on her leg. She reached down, wrapping her fingers around his wrist and slowly lifting his hand away.

Damon let her move his hand. He picked up his chopsticks and dropped a steamed meat bun onto her plate.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Staff arrived to pick up Chase for work, and Tracy headed out to her car to start her day as well.

The housekeeper helped Victoria pack her bags.

After finishing breakfast, Damon went to the bedroom to find his mother. As soon as he walked in, he spoke up. Mom, I’m sorry. But it’s better if you and Dad head back home to stay.

Silly boy, what are you apologizing for?Victoria smiled, her expression calm. You’re my son. You think I don’t know what you’re thinking?

Damon just smiled, staying silent.

Victoria tucked some clothes into the suitcase and turned to gather Chase’s documents, letting out a heavy sigh. Your father is too stubborn. All he cares about is the Blackwood clan, and he’s let Aubrey be treated unfairly time and time again. It’s true what they saythe older generation shouldn’t ive with the younger ones. Our mindsets are just too different. It was bound to lead to a clash eventually.

I’ll drive you back, Damon said, walking over to help her pack his father’s files and books.

Okay.

Mom, don’t blame Bree for this.

Why would I blame her?Victoria chuckled. You’re the one who wants your own space and is kicking us parents out. Besides, your father’s stubbornness is what put Aubrey in such a bad spot. I’m a reasonable motherinlaw, Damon. Don’t go comparing me to Aunt Hannah.

Damon let out a soft laugh. Thanks, Mom.

I know how much you’re hurting, Victoria Stone said, her hands resting on the stack of files. She looked up at Damon, her eyes filled with sympathy. Other men might get into screaming matches with their wives or tear the house apart, but at least they have a marriage license to hold them together No matter how bad it gets, they still have a chance to win her back. But you? You don’t have that. Aubrey doesn’t remember anything, and you arent even legally married. She could walk away tomorrow without a second thought, and there would be nothing you could do to stop her

Damon let out a bitter laugh. He bent down and packed the files into the box. When he stood back up, Victoria’s eyes were already red. She grabbed hus hand, pulling it close and rubbing his knuckles,

He went still, looking down at his mother.

Tears started to spill over, rolling down her cheeks. Damon reached out, his thumb gently catching a stray tear. Mom,he asked softly. Why are you crying all of a sudden?

You were the best of my three children,Victoria said, her voice raspy and thick with heartache. As a little boy, you were so handsome-sweet, polite, and kind. All my friends were jealous. They all wanted to claim you as their future soninlaw. I truly believed life would be easy for someone as good as you. I thought your marriage would be perfect.

Her tears spilled over, and she let out a shaky breath. But out of everyone, you’ve had the hardest time. It hurts me a hundred times more just to watch you go through this. To be honestI think I’m even more terrified of Bree leaving than you are.

Damon’s eyes blurred. He turned to grab a tissue from the desk and gently wiped the tears from his mother’s face. Mom,he whispered, why are you so afraid of her leaving?

Victoria let out a heavy, weary breath. Because during those five years she was gone, my happy, sunny son disappeared. You became a ghostdepressed, silent, drowning yourself in cigarettes and alcohol. I had to watch my bright boy wither away over a breakup, and as your mother, it tore me apart. I would have stayed on my knees praying every single day for Aubrey to come back to you, to never change her mind, and to never leave you again.

Damon couldn’t hold it in anymore. Tears clouded his eyes as he pulled his mother into a tight embrace, tilting his head back to take a sharp, shaky

breath.

Victoria sobbed quietly in his arms.

His chest ached with guilt. I’m sorry, Mom. I’m so sorry for putting you through that. I was young and I didn’t know how to handle the heartbreak. It won’t be like that again. I promise.

Aubrey’s had it rough too.Victoria sniffled, pulling away from his chest to dab at her eyes with a tissue. Maybe it’s better she forgot. I don’t want her to remember, honestly. Those years were too much for anyone to bear. But if she doesn’t remember you, she won’t remember what you two had. If

she

Damon cut her off with a wry smile. Mom, do you really think I’ve lost my touch? Can’t I make her fall for me all over again?

Victoria laughed through her tears, looking up at his handsome face. He was glowing, his eyes deep and captivating even while redrimmed. Her son was in his prime, full of life. Of course he still had the charm.

Alright then. She wiped the last of her tears and went back to packing, a smile playing on her lips. I’ll be waiting for the good news.

I won’t let you down,Damon said, a faint smile touching his lips.

Outside the room, Aubrey leaned against the wall, her gaze fixed on the floor. Her heart felt like lead.
