Chapter 235: Style Over Comfort
Aubrey didn’t get much sleep that night, mostly because Damon couldn’t keep his hands to himself.
Maybe it was subconscious, but in the middle of the night, he pulled her even closer, his touch waking her from her light sleep.
Damon seemed to be out cold, but his large, warm hand had somehow found its way under her pajama top.
She wanted to pull his hand away, but she was terrified of waking him.
Every time she tried to wiggle out of his arms, he’d just pull her right back. He instinctively pressed himself against her, grinding into her hips. Even in his sleep, the physical desire he’d been suppressing was like a live wire, pulsing with a heat that felt like it was about to explode.
She wondered what kind of insane willpower it took for him to stay so restrained.
It left her aching, her body feeling empty and restless.
Just because he didn’t have his memories didn’t mean he didn’t have needs. She eventually drifted back to sleep in the sweltering
heat of their bodies.
When she woke up the next morning, Damon was already gone.
She got up to get ready. Looking in the mirror, her hair was a mess and her cheeks were flushed a deep pink.
Flashes of the night came back to her–that hazy, half–awake state. Damon had seemed so hungry for her, yet he hadn’t taken it any
further.
After finishing her makeup, Aubrey grabbed her bag and stepped out of the room.
Only Tracy and Damon were at the dining table.
Tracy gave her a knowing smirk. “Morning, Aubrey. Come have some breakfast.”
Aubrey draped her coat and bag over a chair and sat next to Tracy, putting her right across from Damon.
She kept her eyes down, refusing to look at him, but she could feel his gaze. It was heavy and hot on her. Once she was settled, he spoke, his voice low and gentle. “Morning.”
She heard him. She just didn’t answer.
Tracy leaned in and whispered with a smirk, “Damon’s in a great mood today. He actually called a tow truck to take his car to the shop just for a tire change. My guess? He wanted an excuse to hitch a ride with you.”
Aubrey felt her heart skip a beat, but she kept her face neutral. She gave a faint smile and shoved a piece of her breakfast bun into her mouth, taking a large bite.
Tracy didn’t stop. She leaned even closer. “So…. did things get all lovey–dovey last night? Did he sweep you off your feet?”
Aubrey had just started chewing when Tracy’s words hit her. Her face turned bright red as she nearly choked. She started coughing violently, covering her mouth as she struggled to swallow.
Damon was on his feet in an instant. He rushed to her side, pressing a glass of warm water into her hand while gently rubbing her back. He shot Tracy a sharp look. “It’s breakfast, Tracy. What the hell did you say to make her freak out like that?”
Tracy looked genuinely sheepish as she grabbed a napkin and handed it over. “Sorry! My bad, Aubrey.”
Aubrey finally swallowed and took a sip of water. “I’m fine,” she said, setting the glass down and forcing a smile. “It wasn’t Tracy. I just… ate too fast.”
Damon pulled his hand away. Once he saw she’d caught her breath, he returned to his seat.
Aubrey took the tissue from Tracy and gave her a soft smile. “I’m fine, really.”

Tracy let out a breath of relief. Aubrey was so easy to fluster; she’d have to be careful about joking like that again.
Oh, I almost forgot,” Tracy said. “The Winter Gala is in a few days. You’re coming to Grandpa’s with Damon, right?”
Aubrey hesitated for a few seconds before looking at Tracy. “Why do you ask?”
“My uncle called my dad and said you must be there. He said he has something very important to talk about. Dad asked me to pass the message along.”
Aubrey went still. She looked at Damon, her mind racing with confusion.
Damon’s gaze was heavy as he locked eyes with her. Seeing the anxiety in her expression, he spoke softly. “If you don’t want to go, don’t. You don’t have to worry about what anyone else says.”
Aubrey stayed silent. A bad feeling settled in her gut. She had no idea what the man was planning this time.
But her father’s appeal was still pending. This might be the perfect chance to put some pressure on her uncle. It was an opportunity she couldn’t afford to waste.
I’ll go,” she said firmly.
Damon didn’t try to talk her out of it. He just nodded.
After breakfast, Tracy and Aubrey headed out together, arm–in–arm. Damon followed close behind them.
The morning air was biting, a cold wind whistling through the trees.
They reached the parking lot, and Tracy yanked open her car door. She glanced back at Damon and teased, “Hey, big brother, want a ride to work?”
Damon shot her a warning glare but didn’t say a word.
She hopped in, laughing, and cranked the engine. As she pulled away, she rolled down the window and yelled to Aubrey, “Sister–in–law, don’t give him a lift! Make him call an Uber!”
Aubrey smiled to herself and watched Tracy drive off before turning back to Damon.
He was standing right behind her, tall and lean, hands shoved into the pockets of his black coat. The coat was unbuttoned, hanging open, and he clearly wasn’t wearing enough layers.
He looked incredible, but he was definitely choosing style over warmth. It was a stark contrast to her, bundled up and bulky in her
winter gear.
She looked up at his handsome face. His deep eyes caught the morning light like polished obsidian, glowing with a soft, warm hue.
Damon’s eyes were easily his best feature.
They were so expressive–sparkling when he was happy, deep and intense when he was worried, and dull when he was sad. You could read every bit of his gentleness and kindness just by looking at them.
‘Are you heading back to the office?” Aubrey asked.
No. I’ve been pulling overtime for the last few days, so I’m taking a comp day today.”
Aubrey blinked, surprised.
So that was why. He hadn’t been avoiding her for the past few days; he’d just been swamped with work. The second he was free, he’d come straight to her.
Either way, hearing that made her feel a whole lot better.
Then why did you get up so early just to follow me out here?”
Damon gave her a small smile “To give you a ride.”

Aubrey caught his smile and felt the corners of her mouth tugging upward. “Thanks.”
“Are you busy today?” he asked.

“Not really. Ryan Carter’s case is going to court today. It’s a standard case, pretty straightforward. It shouldn’t take long.”
“Can I sit in?”
