Do You Still Love Me When We Meet Again? (Aubrey and Damon) novel Chapter 238

Chapter 238: A Different Kind of Intimacy

Tears blurred Aubrey’s vision the moment the words left his lips. A sharp ache flared in her chest.

A life without memories was broken and incomplete. Amnesia wasn’t a blessingit was a tragedy. And those treatmentsthey would leave scars on his brain and body. Just how much was he suffering to be this desperate?

Aubrey couldn’t help herself; she wrapped her arms around his waist, clinging to him. She whispered softly against his shoulder, Don’t do anything stupid. Justgive me a little more time to think things through. This is my future, Damon. If I make the wrong choice, I’ll have to live with the regret for the rest of my life.

Damon didn’t say a word. He just held her in the silence, refusing to let go.

Minutes ticked by. Aubrey felt the exhaustion weighing on her. Damon, she said softly, if you don’t want to go back tonightjust stay here.

Okay,Damon rasped. He finally let her go.

Aubrey shifted to the other side of the bed, lifting the duvet to let him in.

The door was shut, and the lights were off. In the hazy darkness, Damon stripped off his jacket and his sweater, tossing them onto the armchair. He kicked off his shoes and socks and slid under the covers.

Aubrey was already lying down, but Damon sat on the edge of the mattress. Even though his legs were under the quilt, he hesitated.

Why aren’t you lying down?Aubrey asked.

He paused for a few seconds. Sleeping in my jeans is uncomfortable. Can Itake them off?

Aubrey’s face flushed hot. Her voice was tense. Are you wearing thermals underneath?

No.Damon started to pull the covers back to get up. I’ll go to my room and grab some pajamas.

Aubrey quickly reached out and grabbed his undershirt. Damon froze and looked back at her. He couldn’t see much in the darkjust a shadow huddled under the blankets, her hand firmly gripping his clothes.

What is it?he asked, confused.

Don’t go. You’ll wake Tracy and your parents, and they’ll think someone broke in,Aubrey said, letting go of his shirt. Her voice was a soft whisper. Just take off your jeans and get in.

Okay,Damon grunted. He stood up, shed his jeans, and tossed them onto the sofa before sliding back into the warmth of the covers next to her.

Aubrey stiffly turned her back to him. Her heart was racing like a trapped bird, thudding hard against her ribs. She couldn’t see a thing in the pitchblack room, and her entire body was wound tight with tension.

She wasn’t sure if it was his body heat or her own nerves, but a light sweat started to break out across her back. A restless heat settled over her, leaving her throat dry and her skin flushed.

Once Damon settled in, he rolled onto his side to face her. He reached out, his arm sliding slowly around her waist as he pulled her back into his arms.

He kept his hips angled away, making sure his lower body didn’t touch hers, but he held her waist firmly. He buried his face in the hair at the nape of her neck, breathing in her scent. Bree,he rasped, his voice low and husky. I have to head to the base tomorrow. I’ll be gone for about three days, but I’ll be back in time for the Winter Gala.

Will you make it to your grandfather’s for the family dinner?

I should.

Okay,

Once the Winter Gala is over, come back home with me, okay? Stop staying at your parents. It’s too hard for me to see you here.

Your uncle specifically told my dad that I have to be at Grandpa’s for the gala. I’ve got a bad feeling about it, but I’m ready.

Bree, there’s only one person in this world who can tear us apart. No one else matters, no matter what they do.

Who?Aubrey asked, curious.

You.

When Damon said that, Aubrey froze. She went silent, her heart thumping wildly in her chest.

Daman’s arms tightened around her. He nuzzled the back of her neck and took a deep breath. Except for you,he whispered, no one can stop me from loving you.

Being held by him made Aubrey feel like she was burning up. A strange emptiness and a deep ache stirred inside her, making every cell in her body feel like it was boiling.

She bit her lip and swallowed hard.

Her mind tried to stay pure, but it was no match for her body’s cravings. That longdenied hunger made it impossible to stay calm, let alone sleep.

If she felt this restless, she couldn’t imagine how much Damon was struggling. How much he was suppressing, how much selfcontrol he was forced to use.

Maybe it was the darkness that made people reckless. It made them brave, bold, and just a little bit crazy.

Aubrey arched her back slowly, pressing her body into Damon’s.

The moment they touched, Damon went rigid. He grabbed her waist with both hands, pushing her back just enough to create space. His voice was a raw, panicked rasp. Don’t do this.

Aubrey’s breathing was a mess. Under the sweltering heat of the covers, she grabbed his wrist and guided his hand beneath her nightgown, pulling him closer.

Damon’s entire body tensed up like stone.

The sound of his heavy breathing filled her earragged and parched, like a dry desert wind.

Don’t tease me,he choked out, his voice barely a whisper. You’re going to be the death of me.

Damon, stop holding back.”

I don’t have protection.

It’s fine. I’ll take the morningafter pill tomorrow.

That’s not good for your body.

Just this once. It’ll be okay.

‘I can handle it,he managed, his voice strained. Juststop touching me.

But I don’t want to stop.

He could never say no to her. Damon went silent, and then he finally moved.

Above the blankets, Aubrey felt like she was drowning. She bit her lip, gasping for air.

Her mind turned to mush. Eyes clamped shut, she gripped the sheets as her head fell back.

Sensations flooded her brain, both familiar and new. One moment she was floating on clouds; the next, she was drowning in a deep, dark sea.

Aubrey couldn’t control her voice. She clamped her teeth down on the back of her hand to keep from crying out.

Damon slid his arm under her neck, pulling her into his chest. He pressed his forearm against her lips, his breath heavy and ragged. Bite me,he whispered.

I’ll hurt you,she breathed.
