Chapter 245: Family Warmth

Damon pulled into the driveway, and Zach followed right behind him, parking in the garage.

As they stepped out of the garage, they saw his parents‘ car pulling up as well.

Everyone exchanged surprised looks, stunned by the sudden reunion.

She knew her father would never have left his own dad and siblings behind. He was a family man through and through.

The car pulled up right in front of them. Victoria stepped out first, wearing a bright smile. “Aubrey, do you mind if we all spend the holidays at your place?”

Aubrey beamed, her heart full. She nodded quickly. “Mom, of course you can.”

“How about we make dumplings today?” Victoria suggested.

Damon chimed in, “She’s from the South. She usually goes for sweet rice balls for the Winter Gala.”

Aubrey gave a strained laugh and reached down, pinching the muscle in Damon’s thigh. He sucked in a sharp breath, his brow furrowing as he shot her a pained look.

Don’t start a regional food war,” she muttered under her breath, annoyed. “I like dumplings too.”

Victoria chuckled. “We can do both. Let’s make it a real feast–a full seafood spread, too. Your dad and I are picking up the tab.”

Aubrey quickly smoothed things over. “Mom, I really like dumplings, too. You don’t have to go out of your way to make sweet rice balls.”

“It’s fine,” she said. “The more the merrier, so we can make everything. We can even fry up some treats, like beignets.”

Once Chase finished parking and walked over, they all greeted him at once and headed inside together.

Half an hour ago, the housekeeper had gotten a text from Damon. He’d told her to crank the heat up all the way.

The house was toasty the moment they stepped inside.

It was actually a little too warm.

Everyone started peeling off their coats and swapping their boots for slippers.

The bench by the shoe rack only fit two people. Tracy and Aubrey snagged the seats, leaving Olivia to change while standing.

Her winter boots were thick and tight, and with all those heavy layers of clothing, she was clumsy. As she kicked off one boot, her balance snapped. She lurched forward.

The boot finally gave way, and her body stumbled. Zach was faster. He moved like a flash and caught her.

Olivia slammed right into his chest. Shaken, she whispered, “Thanks.”

Zach didn’t say a word. He steadied her, then dropped to one knee. He gripped the heel of her other boot. “Take it off,” he said.

With the parents coming in behind them, Olivia didn’t want to hold everyone up. She rested her hand on Zach’s broad shoulder for balance, slipped out of the second boot, and stepped into a pair of fluffy disposable slippers.

Zach grabbed her boots and tucked them neatly into the rack.

When he turned around, he found Tracy and Aubrey staring at him. Their eyes were wide and round, sparkling with a mischievous glint.

Zach was completely clueless. He quickly swapped his own shoes and hurried into the living room to escape their gaze.

Tracy and Aubrey traded a knowing look and started whispering to each other.

“Why?” Aubrey asked, confused.

Tracy gave a bitter smile. “I’m in love with someone, but he’s in love with someone else.”

Aubrey’s eyes widened in shock. “You? You’re gorgeous, smart, and literal sunshine. You’re telling me you’re stuck in an unrequited crush?”

Tracy quickly clamped her hand over Aubrey’s mouth, shooting a panicked look at her parents as they walked through the door.

They finished changing their shoes, watching the two of them with curiosity.

What are you two doing sitting in the foyer?” Victoria asked. “You’ve got your shoes off. Go on in.”

Tracy and Aubrey scrambled to their feet and hurried inside.

The living room was warm and bright. Everyone settled onto the sofas to relax while the housekeeper started prepping lunch in the

kitchen.

Damon played the perfect host, bringing out tea and snacks for everyone. Then he sat down beside Aubrey. He took her cold hand n his, rubbing it gently between his palms. His eyes stayed locked on her face, filled with a thick, lingering affection. He brought her hand to his lips, breathing warm air onto her skin. “Why are your hands still so cold?” he whispered. “Should I turn the heat up?”

No, don’t,” Aubrey murmured. “Everyone else will be stripping off their layers if you do.

Forget about them,” Damon said. “They can handle a sauna just fine. A little extra heat in here won’t hurt them.”

Aubrey simply smiled and didn’t say a word. She gently pushed his hand down, not wanting to be so blatant with the PDA in front of the family.

Chase still looked shaken, clearly reeling from the shock of his older brother’s dirty laundry. He sat there in brooding silence, his ace pale and tight.

Tracy spoke up, her curiosity getting the better of her. “Uncle’s house has been a total circus this winter. Do you think our cousin and his wife will actually get a divorce? Will Uncle and Aunt Hannah end up in a real fight?”

Chase’s expression soured even more, but he remained silent.

Zach gave a faint, knowing smile. “Neither will happen.”

Why not? Tracy looked completely baffled.

Tracy turned to Damon, her eyes full of awe. “I’m seriously impressed, Damon. You dug up all their skeletons without making a sound. You’re already so busy–how do you even have time for this?”

Damon shrugged, acting like it was nothing. “You don’t have to do everything yourself. As long as the money is right, there are no secrets in this world. Besides, I wasn’t looking for a scandal. I was hunting the person who caused that crash. My child isn’t dying for

“So, who was it?” Tracy asked. The driver who hit Mom and the others–did you find him?”

The driver fled to Southeast Asia and vanished,” Damon replied. “He’s probably been taken out by now. The case might never be closed.”
