Chapter 252: The Appeal Is Approved
Aubrey was still shy. She leaned in, pressing her face against his ear to avoid his gaze. “I like you,” she whispered, her voice barely a breath.
Whether it was deep, soul–consuming love or just a simple “like,” she was still Aubrey Hayes–restrained, but true.
A grin broke across Damon’s face. He pulled her closer and rolled over, pinning her soft body beneath him. Propped up on his elbows, he looked down at her, his eyes brimming with pure affection.
His burning gaze traced every inch of her skin–her brows, her eyes, her nose, those soft pink lips. He couldn’t look away. No matter how much he stared, he couldn’t get enough. He was completely hooked.
Maybe it was just pure physical chemistry. He had no control over his mind or his body. He was completely obsessed with her. Aubrey’s “I love you.” Whether she meant it or not, it was enough for him.
His thumb brushed Aubrey’s lower lip. It was soft, wet, and incredibly tempting.
Aubrey watched him in silence. She couldn’t tell what he was thinking, but his gaze was dark and intense, fixed on her mouth with a raw aching tenderness.
When Damon’s thumb slipped past her teeth, she parted her lips and sucked on it gently, her tongue flicking against his skin.
It was like a jolt of electricity. The heat shot from his thumb straight through his entire body, leaving him weak in the knees. His Adam’s apple bobbed as his breathing turned ragged. He couldn’t stop the low, heavy groan that escaped his throat. She had him completely under her spell.
If Aubrey wanted to seduce him, it was effortless. One tiny move was all it took to make him lose control. He was drowning in her, and he didn’t want to be saved.
Damon finally snapped. His hand slid from her neck downward as he leaned in and crashed his lips against hers.
It was another night of wild, breathless passion.
The next morning, Damon personally moved all her things back into the master bedroom. They were officially living together again.
Some connections only grew deeper in bed. After all, a good sex life was the ultimate glue for any couple.
Whenever they were alone, Damon was glued to her side. It didn’t matter if they were doing something or absolutely nothing. They’d just sit together, holding each other and zoning out in the sun. They’d talk and share stories about work. To them, even the simplest moments were fun.
Damon loved kissing her. He did it all the time, for no reason at all. Her lips, her cheeks, her hands–he went for everything. Whenever he caught her, he’d just grab her and start kissing her.
December was over, and Thanksgiving Break had arrived.
Aubrey Hayes was officially thirty. The New Year kicked off with a massive, life–changing win. The moment she saw the notice that her father’s retrial had been approved, tears flooded her eyes. She stared at the document, her fingers trembling.
Seven years.
Aubrey got home from the law firm that evening. She kicked off her shoes in the foyer and called out, “Damon! I’m home! I have news–huge news! Damon?”
The housekeeper poked her head out of the kitchen. “He’s not back from work yet, Ma’am.”
“Got it.” Aubrey was beaming. she walked into the living room and pulled out her phone to call him.

He picked up almost immediately.
“Bree,” he said.
“Damon, are you off work yet?”
Tm driving Almost home”
Hurry back. I have the best news ever to tell you.”
Got it. I’ll be there in ten minutes.”
Okay Aubrey hung up. She sank into the sofa, finally letting out a long breath. The smile on her face only grew wider.
Without her uncle there to block her every move, the application had sailed through. The whole process had taken less than two weeks someone must have fast–tracked it.
A few minutes later, the sound of a car engine pulled her attention to the driveway,
Aubrey bolted for the door.
Her heart was pounding with pure adrenaline.
Damon had just parked and hopped out of the driver’s seat. As he shut the door and turned around, a blur flew toward him. Before he could even register what was happening, his arms opened instinctively, catching her mid–air.
The impact sent him stumbling back until his spine hit the car door. He pulled her flush against him, a tender smile tugging at his lips. Wow. Is this the new standard for greeting me?”
Aubrey stood on her tiptoes, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck as she buried her face in his shoulder. The excitement from moments ago suddenly sharpened into a raw, aching relief. “It’s been six years, Damon… but my dad’s case finally has a breakthrough. The application was approved. They’re re–opening the investigation. I can finally take this back to court.” Damon smiled and closed his eyes, burying his face in her fragrant hair. “I know,” he whispered. “It’s finally happening.”
Aubrey pulled back, searching his face. He was too calm. “You already knew?
“Yeah, my dad told me. He wanted to tell you himself, but he didn’t think you’d get the notice so quickly.”
Aubrey froze. She stepped out of his arms. “Your dad is here?”
“Mm–hmm.” Damon reached out and ruffled her hair. “He drove over with me.”
Right then, a pointed cough came from beside them. “Ahem.”
Aubrey jumped back, spinning around instantly.
Chase Blackwood stood there with his hands behind his back, looking like a stern official. He was busy studying the sky and the ground, doing everything he could to avoid looking at the two of them wrapped around each other.
Aubrey’s cheeks flushed red. She took another step back, her voice thick with embarrassment. “Dad? L… I didn’t see you there.”
Only then did Chase look at her directly. “Mm. I came to check on you.”
“Thank you, Dad.” Aubrey gave a respectful nod. She knew the truth–without Chase’s influence, her uncle would never have backed down.
Chase’s expression turned solemn, his voice heavy. “I hope your father is innocent, Aubrey. This is his last shot. If we don’t find the evidence to clear his name this time, there won’t be a second chance. This is it.
Aubrey nodded, her expression serious. “I understand, Dad. I’m going to do whatever it takes to find the evidence and clear my father’s name.”
“Make sure to ask your brother for help,” Chase added. “He’s got experience with these kinds of investigations.”

“I will.”
Chase gave a sentimental sigh. “You two are really something. It’s freezing out here–let’s get inside.”
With his hands tucked behind his back, he turned and headed toward the house.
