Chapter 255: Memories Restored
As they were leaving the courtroom, the opposing lawyer walked up to Aubrey.
His voice was thick with contempt and bitterness. “I never expected the famous Lawyer Hayes to play so dirty,” he sneered, looking at her with pure disdain. “Contempt of court, publicly shaming a woman, and driving my client to a breakdown just to win?
Winning a case when you didn’t even have the evidence… I’ve truly seen what you’re capable of today.”
Who exactly did I insult?” Aubrey countered with a cold smirk. “Madison Lewis was sentenced to two years for solicitation and ublic indecency. Those are court–certified facts, not insults. I wasn’t slandering her, I was stating the truth. At most, you could ay I dragged up her past to rattle your client, but don’t accuse me of insulting women.”
The opposing lawyer was left speechless. He tilted his head back and took a long, deep breath to steady himself. Once he regained is composure, he couldn’t help but ask, “Lawyer Hayes, you risked a contempt of court charge and being thrown out of the room ast to provoke him. Weren’t you afraid he’d keep his cool and stay silent?”
There was no way he’d keep his cool.” Aubrey’s eyes flashed with absolute confidence. “I’ll admit, the direct evidence against him vas thin. It’s hard to pin a murder on someone after all this time. I could have gotten my father exonerated with what I already had. ut I needed to put the real killer behind bars today. If I didn’t, I’d be the one in the crosshairs the moment he walked free.”
Why?”
Because he has XYY syndrome. A man who can kill his own father doesn’t have ‘stable‘ in his vocabulary. He was obsessed with me nce, did everything he could to make me his. But do you know what happened the moment I pushed his buttons? He whipped me He shredded the skin on my back until it was a bloody pulp. He even set dogs on me. When you’re dealing with a monster that iolent, the only way to win was to shove him over the edge and force a confession.”
The opposing lawyer’s arrogance vanished, replaced by a look of grudging respect. He shook his head and gave her a reluctant humbs–up. “I’ve finally seen the legendary Lawyer Hayes in action. I lost the case, but I definitely learned something today. I just ope I never have to face you across an aisle again.”
With that, he grabbed his briefcase and walked off.
Aubrey watched his retreating back, her gaze heavy and dark.
That’s when she saw her.
Madison Lewis stumbled out of the courtroom, looking like she’d lost her soul. Her face was deathly pale, her eyes vacant and Jazed over as she shuffled down the steps, one shaky breath at a time.

Aubrey’s gaze turned cold. “When I was pregnant, you hit me with your scooter. Who was behind that?”
Madison looked stunned. “I thought you had amnesia. You remember that?”
Aubrey’s expression darkened. She didn’t answer. Instead, she pressed, “I asked you a question. Who was it?”
‘Evan.”
Why?”
‘I don’t know! All I know is that you’re the reason my son is behind bars. I wanted to make your life a living hell. Besides, he paid
me.”
‘Did he ask you to do anything else to hurt me?”
No. After your car accident, he never reached out to me again.”
Fine. That’s enough.”
Madison grabbed at her arm, desperate. “Can you… can you get my son’s sentence reduced?”
‘T’ll do what I can,” Aubrey said, leaving the woman behind as she walked out of the courthouse.
For a mother on the verge of a total breakdown, a white lie was the only kindness left to give. Aubrey headed straight to the prison to pick up her father.
Theodore stepped out of the prison gates. He looked up at the pale winter sun, tears streaming down his weathered face. “Dad.” Aubrey walked up to him and took the small black bag from his hand. “I’m taking you to your son’s place for now. But listen to me–don’t give him a cent of your money. Keep it locked down tight. As long as you hold the purse strings, he’ll keep playing the part of the devoted son.”
Theodore quickly wiped his eyes. “What about you?”
“I still have work to do. I need to clear your record and finalize the compensation for your wrongful imprisonment.
Theodore grabbed Aubrey’s hands. He was shaking, his voice thick with emotion, “Aubrey… thank you. If you hadn’t spent the last six years fighting for me, I never would have made it out of there.”
Aubrey managed a small, tight smile. Her eyes welled up instantly as she looked at him.
He had aged so much. Six years had been a lifetime, grinding a once–strong man down into a frail, hunshed shadow of his former
self
The more she looked at him, the more her heart ached. The pain in her chest was sharp and heavy A tow tears exaped rolling down her cheeks
She brushed them away and spoke softly Come on, Dad Let’s get you home
“Okay,” Theodore said, following her to the car Once they were buckled in, he couldn’t help but ask, “Aubrey, are you sure you re okay now? No more side effects from the surgery?
I’m fine. I’ve fully recovered,” Aubrey replied as she started the engine What makes you ask?
“Your eyes,” Theodore sighed, sounding relieved “When you visited me a few months ago, you looked like a stranger. You were so cold. But now… there’s love in there again. And sadness I raised you for twenty years, Aubrey I know my daughter”
Aubrey didn’t say anything. She just focused on the road, keeping her face neutral
Inside, her heart was racing, but she didn’t feel happy. Instead, a wave of bitterness washed over her. It felt hollow

She wanted to scream at the top of her lungs, sob until she couldn’t breathe, and then just laugh until it hurt.
But all those conflicting emotions were drowned out by one thing: the crushing weight of how much she missed Damon.
After dropping Theodore off at her brother’s place and making sure he was settled, she headed back out to take care of the rest.
Her father was out, but the legal battle wasn’t over. There were still a thousand little details to deal with.
Sierra went absolutely ballistic when she heard Aubrey had won the case. She was bouncing around like a manic rabbit, screaming and squeezing the life out of her friend. She immediately grabbed some beer and ordered a mountain of BBQ to celebrate.
In the middle of the massive living room, the two of them sat on the rug around a low coffee table. They clinked their cans and went to town on the skewers, washing the grilled meat down with cold beer.
Sierra seemed even more hyped than Aubre elf. she didn’t shut up for a second, cursing out the killer, the judge, the awyers–basically anyone she could
