Chapter 258: I’ll Wait for You in New Haven City
For the next three days, they were inseparable. They were glued to each other every waking moment.
Time still moved too fast. It felt like it was over in the blink of an eye.
They ate together, walked together, stayed tangled in bed, and slept in each other’s arms. But they still couldn’t stop the inevitable goodbye.
This time, it was her turn to see Damon off at the airport.
Aubrey stood at the boarding gate, her eyes already swimming with tears. She shoved one hand into her jacket pocket and used the other to hook her pinky around his. She kept her head down, silent, her chest tightening with the pain of letting go.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” Damon asked. He was so much taller than her that he couldn’t see her face while she was looking at the ground. Aubrey just shook her head. No words, no eye contact.
“I’m about to board,” he said softly. “Anything you want to say to me before I go?”
She tucked her chin even lower and shook her head again.
Damon looked down at their hands. She was slowly swinging his arm back and forth, like a pouting girl who didn’t want to say goodbye.
He bent down, trying to catch a glimpse of her face, only to find her eyes bloodshot. Tears were swirling in them, ready to spill over. She jerked her head away, trying to hide from him.
Damon panicked. He immediately pulled her into his arms, crushing her against him. “Don’t cry. Forget it, I’m not going. I’ll stay here in Crestview with you. You’re breaking my heart, Aubrey.”
She leaned against his chest, her voice trembling and thick with sobs. “Time moves so slowly when you’re not around. I still have a whole month before I can move back to the capital. I don’t want you to leave.”
“Then I won’t,” Damon murmured, kissing the top of her head.
Aubrey whispered against his shirt, “No… I can’t let you miss work because of me. I’d feel too guilty.”
“You little crybaby,” Damon muttered, his own eyes rimming with red. Saying goodbye was clearly just as hard for him as it was for her.
“Bree, did you get all your memories back?”
Aubrey thought for a moment. “Not all of them. I remember the happy stuff. The sad, painful parts… those haven’t come back yet.”
“Are you just saying that to make me feel better?”
“I’m serious.” She knew she couldn’t really fool him, but she wanted to keep things positive. She didn’t want him worrying about the dark stuff. “How’s your head? Is it affecting your mood?”
“Not at all. I’m eating fine, sleeping well, and I’ve got plenty of energy. The only thing making me sad right now is you leaving.”
Damon pulled back slightly and cupped her face in his hands. He stared into her tear–filled eyes. “If you start feeling depressed–at all—you tell me immediately. Promise?”
“I promise.”
“I’ll be waiting for you in New Haven.”
Aubrey nodded, biting her lip. The tears she’d tried to hold back spilled over again. She didn’t care that they were in the middle of a crowded airport. She stood on her tiptoes and pressed a kiss to his lips.
Damon gave a small smile. He held her face and leaned down, deepening the kiss for a few long, lingering seconds.
No matter how much they wanted to stay together, the goodbye was inevitable.
That was the worst part of a long–distance relationship. When you’re head over heels, the time apart feels like forever, the time together is over in a heartbeat, and you’re constantly stuck facing another separation
After Damon passed through security, he kept looking back at her.
Aubrey just stood there, her eyes fixed on him.
Even from a distance, he could see her shimmering, tear–filled eyes. She looked so fragile and heartbroken, clearly hating to let him go. She was radiant in the middle of the crowd.
Soft, elegant, and poised in her cream–colored maxi dress, she had a breathtaking beauty that pulled at his heartstrings. It made leaving her even harder.
Those unshed tears and the longing written all over her face made Damon’s heart ache.
He waved to her. “Go on home.”

“Bye,” Aubrey said, taking a deep breath
and waving back.
A second later, Damon turned and walked toward his gate. He didn’t look back again.
He boarded the plane, and Aubrey headed out of the airport.
The longing was already starting to feel overwhelming.
Instead of going straight home, Aubrey drove around aimlessly. she needed the fresh air to dull the ache in her chest, trying to use anything to distract herself from the separation anxiety.
She stopped at a few boutiques and picked up two new dresses.
Shopping bags in hand, she went to the mall cinema and bought a ticket for an intense action movie.
By the time the movie ended, she felt a little better.
She continued wandering through the shops until she stepped into a jewelry store. It was only after circling the glass displays that she realized it was a high–end diamond shop.
The store was filled with nothing but diamonds and fine jewelry.
“Are you looking for a ring or a necklace, ma am
A sales associate walked over, greeting her with a polite smile.
Aubrey glanced at her before turning back to the displays. “Just browsing.”
“Of course.” The woman stepped back, giving her space to look around.
When Aubrey reached the engagement ring counter, she stopped in her tracks. The brilliant, dancing light from the diamonds held her gaze.

“Do you have matching sets? For couples?”
“Yes, they’re right here.” The associate led her to the next counter. “Is this for a wedding, ma’am?”
Aubrey gave a shy smile and nodded. “Yeah.
“Is fiancé here with you today?“”
your
“No.” Aubrey studied the rings in the case, her voice calm. “I’m the one proposing. He doesn’t know yet.”
