Chapter 274: A Simple Wedding
Old Mr. Blackwood gave a hearty chuckle. “That really is a bit low. How about we add another zero to that figure? What do you say?” Theodore waved his hands frantically. “No, no… that won’t do. It would ruin the local custom. I set the price, and I’m sticking to it. If your family really wants to give more, give it to my daughter directly. Call it a wedding gift.”
The elders stopped haggling over the marriage settlement. They were getting along famously, laughing and cheering as they started on the drinks.
Damon took Aubrey’s hand, leaning in close. “The settlement,” he whispered. “Do you think it’s too little?”
“Not at all.” Aubrey smiled, leaning into his ear. Her voice was a soft breath against his skin. “I’d pay just to marry you, Damon
Blackwood.”
“People will talk,” he teased.
“Let them talk. They’ll only be jealous that I’m marrying into such a great family and getting such an amazing husband. Nobody gets envious over a high price tag. Besides, back in my hometown, a few tens of thousands is the norm. This is perfect.”
Damon gave a faint smile, resting her hand on his thigh and rubbing it gently. “If your dad ever wants to retire in New Haven, I can take care of him.”
“He won’t leave my brother,” Aubrey sighed. “He’s old–fashioned. Since he has a son, he’ll stay with him no matter what–even if my brother ends up flat broke.”
Damon didn’t really get it, but he respected her family’s ways.
He stayed silent, looking down at Aubrey’s pale, soft hand, his thumb tracing the curve of her nails.
He treated her hand like some rare treasure, touching and rubbing it over and over.
Aubrey watched how obsessed he was, then looked at her own fingers. They were just normal hands. She had no idea what he found so interesting.
She shifted her gaze to her father.
After her surgery, she’d forgotten a lot of things from her childhood, though her recent memories were clear.
But she still remembered that her mother didn’t think girls should go to school. Her mom had wanted her to start working and find
a husband as soon as possible. It was her father who had insisted she go to college.
She was incredibly grateful to him for that.
If it wasn’t for her father’s persistence, she never would have met Damon.
On the day of the wedding, the house was decked out in festive lights and decorations.
There weren’t many guests–only the closest relatives from both families.
There was no boisterous wedding procession or rowdy pranks. It was simple, dignified, and low–key, yet every detail screamed luxury.
The house was decorated with solemn elegance, rich in traditional style, and everyone was dressed to the nines.
Aubrey and Damon wore vintage traditional wedding attire. They knelt to offer tea to their parents and bowed to each other in the ceremonial hall. Every other tedious step was skipped just so Aubrey wouldn’t get too tired.
As soon as the ceremony ended, Aubrey went back to her room to rest.
Four tables were set up in the courtyard outside.

The Hayes family took one table, while the Blackwoods took three. Everyone gathered in high spirits to celebrate the union. His eldest aunt asked curiously between bites of food, “Damon, why did you keep things so low–key?”
Damon replied bluntly, “A wedding is for our happiness, not for the entertainment of the guests.”
Taken aback by his sharp tone, his aunt asked awkwardly, “And where’s your wife? Why isn’t she out here eating with us?”
“She’s tired and needs to rest. I already had the help bring her meal to the room.”
“Don’t you guys think Aubrey’s put on some weight?” his second aunt suddenly piped up.
The moment the words left her mouth, the entire table went dead silent.
Everyone noticed, but no one said a word. After all, it was rude to point out that a woman had put on weight.
Victoria Stone gave a thin smile. “A little weight is good. It’s healthy.”
“I don’t think she’s just gaining weight,” the aunt chimed in. “She looks pregnant. And she looks pretty far along, too.
In an instant, every eye in the place snapped to Damon. Shock and confusion were written all over their faces.
Damen didn’t know how to respond.
Some things couldn’t be hidden forever.
He chose to stay silent.
Seeing his silence, Grandpa beamed. He stood up, looking thrilled, and raised his glass. “Come on, everyone! Let’s have a toast. Congratulations to Damon and Aubrey!”
“Congratulations!” everyone cheered, raising their glasses high.
Damon looked triumphant. He lifted his glass with a wide smile. “Thanks, everyone.”
Joy filled the entire courtyard. The evening sun was soft and warm, and a gentle breeze blew through.
Life isn’t always warm, and not everyone is kind.
Living your own life well is what matters most.
The party eventually wound down.

No one in the Blackwood family pressed Damon for answers about Aubrey’s weight gain. They all chose to be respectful and kept their questions to themselves.
The helper finished cleaning up the house and left for her week–long vacation.
Damon got his in–laws settled at his grandfather’s house and didn’t make it back home until everything was finally taken care of.
It was already past ten at night.
He couldn’t wait to get to their room.
The lights were on. The curtains and the bedding were all a vibrant, festive red.
There were red wedding decals everywhere–on the windows, the mirrors, and even the closet doors.
His wife had already showered and dried her long hair. Wearing a silk red nightgown, she was sitting in his study, lost in a book.
When she heard the door open, Aubrey quickly set the book down and hurried toward him.
Damon caught her in his arms, steadying her. “Don’t run. Take it slow.”
“Damon,” Aubrey whispered, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck. She stood on her tiptoes and buried her face in his shoulder, her heart racing. “We’re actually married. It’s done.”

“Yeah, it’s done.” Damon tightened his grip, pulling her flush against his chest. He dipped his head into the crook of her neck, breathing in her sweet scent. He felt a wave of relief wash over him. “We’re husband and wife now. Partners for life. We’re never being apart again.”
“Yeah,” Aubrey choked out, her voice thick with emotion. “The ceremony itself didn’t matter. All that matters is that I finally got to marry you. I’ve never felt so happy.”
Damon grabbed Aubrey by the waist and lifted her up, her feet dangling in the air.
He walked further into the room toward the massive red bed. After sitting down, he pulled her onto his lap, his arms still wrapped tight around her. “Are you tired?” he whispered.
“No.”
“I got your father and your brother’s family settled at my grandfather’s place. They’re flying back to Crestview City tomorrow.”
“Okay.”
“Sleepy?”
“Not at all.”
“The family probably realized you’re pregnant, but they didn’t say anything.”
島
Aubrey gave a soft laugh. “Evan and Aunt Hannah are in prison, and Uncle’s still at The Retreat. I don’t think there’s any danger left.”
“The biggest danger right now is you,” he teased. “You walk too fast without looking where you’re going, you aren’t careful with what you eat, and you’re constantly trying to seduce me. When everything else is safe, you’re the biggest threat.”
Aubrey chuckled and let go of his neck. She sat up straight to look him in the eye, her gaze shimmering with a playful, shy look. “Babe, go take a shower.”
“What for?” Damon asked, his brows furrowing.
Aubrey stood up and grabbed his wrist, tugging him toward the bathroom. “Just go shower. I’m sleeping with you tonight.”
“No,” Damon said, shaking his head.
Aubrey clung to his arm, pressing her soft body against him. “It’s our wedding night,” she whined playfully. “If you won’t sleep with me, I’m going to find Tracy.”
Damon panicked. “Why would you go to Tracy’s?”
Going to Tracy on their wedding night? Knowing how Tracy’s mind worked, she’d spin the story into something wild. The whole family would be at their door by midnight demanding an explanation.
“Then sleep with me,” Aubrey said unabashedly, tugging on his arm.
Damon’s Adam’s apple bobbed. His gaze was burning with desire, but he still shook his head.
“I’ll be gentle. I won’t hurt the baby,” Aubrey promised, pulling him toward the bathroom. “Come on, I’ll help you shower.”
“Babe…” Damon wanted her, but he was still worried.
Aubrey gave him a bossy command in her softest voice. “Don’t you dare say no. If you keep refusing me, I’ll pin you to the bed and have my way with you anyway.”
Damon felt completely helpless, but his smile only grew sweeter.
