Campus life went back to being quiet.
A week later, he showed up at the library again. He didn’t sit directly across from her this time. Instead, he took a seat at an angle, facing her. He had a book on the table, but he didn’t even bother opening it. He just sat there, his eyes locked on her.
Ethan walked over and sat down across from her. “Movie this weekend?” he whispered. “There’s a new anime out. It looks pretty good.” “Sure, Aubrey said.
Ethan stopped talking and started flipping through his notes. When he looked up, he noticed a guy watching them from across the room. He watched him for a second, a smirk playing on his lips. He t
He tapped Aubrey’s book with his pen. “Check it out, three o’clock. There’s a really hot guy looking over here. You think he’s checking me
Aubrey’s hand froze mid–sentence.
“He’s seriously hot. You think he’s into guys?” Ethan grinned, his eyes constantly darting back toward him.
Aubrey went silent for a few seconds
“His name is Damon Blackwood. He’s the guy I told you about–the one I thought I’d mistaken for someone else. He asked me out last week, but I turned him down.”
Ethan’s expression soured instantly. He slammed his notebook shut in frustration. “You’ve got to be kidding me. You’re really acting that high and mighty? A guy that good–looking wants you, and you say no? Who are you trying to spite?”
Im here to study, not to find a boyfriend,” Aubrey snapped.
Dating doesn’t get in the way of studying. Just look at him–he has that ‘rich kid‘ aura. He’s clearly from a wealthy family.” Ethan crossed his arms and stole another glance at Damon. “With a face like that, he beats out ninety–nine percent of the guys at this university. You should be Counting your lucky stars he’s even interested.”
Aubrey wasn’t impressed. She looked back down at her notes. “His family is actually broke.”
Please,” Ethan scoffed, falling silent.
A guy with that kind of presence was a product of money and high–class breeding. No matter how hard someone poor tried to fake it, they could never replicate that kind of effortless confidence.
Ethan stood up, looking irritated. “I can’t focus,” he muttered. “I’m heading back to the dorm.”
Not even two minutes after he left, Damon took the seat directly across from her.
Aubrey froze and looked up at him.
He’d been sitting over there for ages without moving, but the moment Ethan walked away, he’d swooped in.
He dropped his books on the table, his eyes fixed on hers. “Is that your boyfriend?” he asked in a low voice. Aubrey thought he was being weird. His tone was practically dripping with jealousy.
“No.”

They were in different majors, so they didn’t have any classes together.
But Damon went out of his way to create those moments. Even if it was just for a split second, he made sure he saw her
This lukewarm dynamic dragged on for three months.
Aubrey had gotten used to Damon showing up almost every day. He’d say hi or chat about nothing in particular. But when he suddenly vanished for a few days, she found herself surprisingly rattled.
After overthinking it for days, she finally cracked and sent him a text.
[Hey, you there?]
A moment later, Damon replied: [For now]
Aubrey stared at her screen, trying to decode that. [What do you mean “for now“?]
[Sick. Not sure if I’ll still be alive in a minute.]
Aubrey panicked instantly. [What’s wrong? Is it serious?] she typed.
[Deadly serious,] Xavier replied. [I might not make it.]
Aubrey’s heart sank when she read those words. A wave of worry washed over her, tight and suffocating. [Where are you?] [Dorm.]
[If it’s that serious, why are you still in your dorm? Tell your family. You need to get to a hospital right now.]
[Will you take me? Please?]
[Okay.]
Panic flared in her chest, making her agree instantly.
She waited for him at the entrance of the guys‘ dorm.
When he finally showed up, he looked decent–just a bit worn out.
She scanned him, terrified it was some major illness, but she couldn’t see anything wrong yet.
Once they got to the hospital, Damon claimed he was broke. Aubrey ended up paying for the registration and all the tests.
Her heart was in her throat the whole time. Then, the doctor finally spoke. “It’s just a common cold.”
Aubrey froze. She wanted to punch him right then and there and leave him to rot.
But then she looked at him. He looked so pathetic, like he didn’t even have money for the prescription. He’d been stuck in his dorm for days. trying to just sleep it off.
Her heart softened again. She sighed and paid for the medicine.
They walked out of the hospital, and she shoved the bag of pills into Damon’s hands. “What is wrong with you?” she snapped, her voice shaking with anger. “I hate being lied to. Does it make you happy to see me this worried?”
“I didn’t lie,” Damon said, his voice low. “I am sick. And people actually die from the flu all the time.”
Aubrey was speechless. She turned on her heel, huffing as she tried to walk away.
Damon caught up in two strides and grabbed her wrist. “Aubrey.”
She glanced back at him. “What now?”
I can’t afford the medical bill,” he said, his expression dead serious. “Can I just give myself to
you instead?”
