Chapter 247: A Baby Soon
The moment Chase asked the question, the atmosphere at the table bottomed out. Everyone went stiff. Worried glances darted back and forth between Chase and Aubrey.
Damon’s expression darkened. “Dad, really? You-
Aubrey reached out and lightly pressed her hand against Damon’s arm. She was telling him to stay out of it; she didn’t need him to dodge the bullet for her.
Besides, she knew everyone wanted to know the truth. If she didn’t clear the air now, there would always be a lingering doubt between them. It was better to just lay it all out.
Damon looked at her, his voice dropping to a low, soft murmur. “You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to.”
It’s okay.” Aubrey gave him a small, calm smile and set her fork down. That recording was a call I made to Damon’s uncle. I thought he cared about Damon’s career and his future at the agency. I used that to pressure him–I wanted him to stop interfering with my Father’s case so the appeal would finally go through. We already have more than enough evidence. But I miscalculated. He didn’t want me marrying Damon because of some ‘family honor‘ or Damon’s job. It was all because of Veronica Pierce.”
Chase frowned, his brow furrowing. “You think he’s the one blocking your father’s appeal?”
Yes,” Aubrey said, her voice firm. “Dad, I know it’s hard to believe your own brother would abuse his power like that. I know you wo are close. But the evidence my brother found after his investigation is solid. It’s more than enough to get the case reopened.”
Chase spoke up again. “And those threats you made? Were they real?”
No.” Aubrey sighed softly, a trace of sadness in her eyes. “If my father’s name is never cleared, I would never force Damon to quit
is job just to be with me.”
The table went dead silent. No one even touched their food anymore. They just sat there, hanging on her every word.
Chase cleared his throat and asked, “What about your feelings for him? You said you couldn’t remember the past, eel anything for him. Was that a lie too?”
that
you didn’t
Yes, it was.” Aubrey’s gaze softened, her voice turning sincere. “Even without my memories, I still fell for him. He’s the kind of nan anyone would love.”
Damon bit his lip, trying to fight back a grin, but he couldn’t hide the joy written all over his face. His eyes were bright, locked onto Aubrey with total devotion.
seeing him look that thrilled, the others couldn’t help but smile. They were genuinely happy for him.
Chase looked at Damon and gave a helpless, knowing laugh.
Damon and Aubrey had been together for years. Their relationship had seen its share of highs and lows, but the spark hadn’t faded ›ne bit. Hearing Aubrey’s confession, Damon looked like a teenager in love. He couldn’t hide the joy on his face, and his eyes even held a trace of shyness.
That kind of devotion… he really was his father’s son.
Chase felt a wave of emotion. He paused, thinking, then looked at Aubrey. “Your father’s case… if the Crestview District Attorney’s Office won’t reopen it, I’ll send in the Oversight Committee. The Major Crimes Unit will get involved. We’re going to get to the bottom of this.”
Thank you, Dad, Aubrey whispered. Her eyes welled up, her heart full of gratitude.
Chase’s older brother had raised him. To him, family was everything. Yet here he was, choosing Aubrey over his own brother. It was a massive sacrifice–the ultimate proof of how much he loved Damon.
If Damon hadn’t dug up the dirt on his uncle, Chase probably would have kept trusting his brother blindly.

Let’s eat, Chase said, picking up his fork. He looked around at everyone. “Don’t let the food get cold. Dig in.”
Everyone picked up their utensils and started eating again.
Tracy pointed at a plate of dumplings. “Zach, you haven’t finished the ones Olivia made. Keep eating!”
Zach gave a helpless smile and reached out with his chopsticks.
Suddenly, Damon let out a muffled grunt. “What the hell is this?”
He grabbed a napkin and spat the mouthful out. He frowned at the hard objects sitting on the paper.
Everyone’s eyes shifted to his hand.
Inside the mangled dumpling skin were a red date, a peanut, a longan, and a lotus seed.
Damon looked up, totally confused. He looked at Victoria. “Mom, did you make this?”
Victoria looked just as puzzled. “Wasn’t me.”
I told Olivia to put those in,” Tracy said, her voice sharp with annoyance. “Why are you eating her dumplings anyway? Those were
neant for Zach.”
I just grabbed one. I wasn’t looking at the shape,” Damon said, crumpling the napkin and tossing it onto the table. “It’s rock hard. The peanut and the lotus seed are both raw. Why would you even put that in there?”
Tracy enunciated every word. “It’s a tradition. Dates, Peanuts, Longan, Lotus seeds. It means ‘Have a baby soon.”
Olivia hadn’t expected that. Her face instantly flushed hot. She felt a wave of embarrassment, but she was also secretly relieved Zach hadn’t been the one to bite into it. That would have made things incredibly awkward.
Damon smirked and reached for the crumpled tissue. “It’s still edible, really. I’ll just finish it-”
Aubrey quickly grabbed his hand, her brow furrowed. “Gross! You already spat it out. Don’t eat that.”
The rest of the family couldn’t help but laugh.
Damon let go of the tissue and looked at Tracy. “Are there any more?”
Nope, just that one.” Tracy sighed, sounding defeated. “The universe must be on your side or something. I only made one, pecifically for my brother, and somehow you’re the one who snagged it.”
Damon just grinned and went back to his dinner.
The cozy vibes of the Winter Gala lasted late into the evening, and everyone eventually headed home in high spirits.
by midnight, the temperature outside had dropped to 21°F, but inside, the floor heating kept the room perfectly toasty.
Aubrey finished her shower and dried her long hair. She sat on the bed, scrolling through the weather forecast on her phone.
Then, there were two soft knocks at the door.
She checked the time. It was already 11:00 PM.
Why was Damon still up?
She tossed the covers aside, got out of bed, and went to open the door.
Damon was standing there, wearing nothing but a thin T–shirt and pajama pants.
