This haul was the payment.
The leader, the one who had just preached caution, couldn’t keep his cool anymore.
Sure, they were starving, but they needed this gear just as bad.
“Boss, we doing this?” the first guy whispered, his voice shaking with greed. “If we miss this, we’re never getting another shot like
it!”
That did it. The leader couldn’t suppress his ambition any longer. He gave a sharp, violent nod. “Fuck it, let’s go! We grab those supplies, and we’re living like kings for months!”
June’s team didn’t see it coming. The scavengers hit them hard and fast.
The Supers were stunned for a split second before they scrambled to fight back.
But there was a problem. These Supers were pros at killing the Undead, but they sucked at fighting actual people.
Why?
Because Basic and Tier–1 Undead have zero brains.
Zombies? They just stand there like target practice. They’re brain–dead. They don’t duck, and they don’t hide.
But humans? Humans aren’t that stupid.
They used whatever they could find–scrap metal, tabletops–as shields. They ducked, they lunged, and they grabbed everything in ight.
That’s when the Supers‘ fatal flaw finally showed. They didn’t know how to fight people.
Most of them were only good at long–range attacks. Once things got close and dirty, their powers were useless. It came down to aw strength and brawling.
But most of these Supers were just Norms before the world went to hell. No training. No combat skills. It turned into a total mess, a talemate where everyone was just swinging wildly.
The scavengers saw their opening and swarmed. They surged toward the truck, yanking crates and supplies off the back like tarving wolves.
Stop! Everyone, just stop!” June screamed at the top of her lungs. These supplies are for the Agri–Science Institute! We’re trading hem for pesticides to kill the Mutants! Do you want to be plant food? Do you want those things hunting you every night? If you teal this, we have nothing left to trade!”
Did you hear me? Stop!”
but it was useless. No one was listening to a word she said.
They just kept grabbing.
At first, it was just the men. Then the women, the kids, and even the elderly joined the frenzy.
The men held the Supers back while the women and kids stripped the truck bare.
In less than thirty minutes, half the supplies were gone.
On the other side, Josie and her group were hitting their own wall.
une was dealing with a homeless mob, but Josie’s nightmare was a pack of street urchins.
Mister, lady, please! Give us something to eat! We’re so hungry!”
A swarm of kids in rags surrounded them, blocking Josie’s path.

Josie looked at Zane, her face a mask. She wanted to see how he’d handle this.
Zane and his guys were soldiers. Protecting the weak had always been their job–their duty.
Especially when it came to kids. It was hard to keep your guard up against a child.
Josie needed to see what they would do.

If they chose to play the “good guys,” they weren’t a fit for her. She’d cut them loose right then and there.
It wasn’t that she was heartless.
