Doomsday Revenge: Payback Time (Josie) novel Chapter 174

Chapter 174

Someone noticed Josie had already gone inside to crash, only to turn right back around and head out. She was walking with a purpose, heading straight for the woods on the side of the highway.

Josie?Zane was on her heels immediately. What’s wrong?

There’s a voice in my head,Josie told him. It’s screaming for me. I’m going to go check it out.

A voice? What voice? I didn’t hear anything. Are you sure you’re not just hearing things?Zane kept pace with her, eyes darting through the shadows. It’s dangerous out here at night. I know you’re a powerhouse, but stay sharp.

Yeah,Josie nodded casually. I know. Relax. It’ll take a lot more than this to put me down.

Josie sidestepped Zane and walked straight into the forest.

Zane stayed right on her heels, his Palm Bolts ready to blow.

If anything went sideways, he was ready to back her up instantly.

Come out!Josie shouted into the dark. You’re the one who called me here. I’m counting to five. If you don’t show yourself, I’m leveling every plant in this clearing.

Five, four, three, two, oneThe second she hit one, a row of gold and silver daggers hovered in her palm, ready to fly.

Squeak, squeak, squeak. A tiny plant suddenly burst from the underbrush.

It hopped along just like a rabbit, bouncing right up to Josie. Then, it stretched out its branches and latched onto her leg.

Josie and Zane both froze, completely floored.

What the hell was going on?

Since when did plants become sentient?

Right. Mutant flora were basically sentient nowadays anyway.

But something thisconscious? That was a first.

Zane went into full combat mode. He raised a hand, a bolt of lightning crackling, ready to blow the thing off Josie’s leg.

Wait!Josie shouted. One of her Golden Blades hissed through the air, intercepting the bolt and dragging it away. It slammed into the distance with a deafening boom.

What are you doing?Zane stared at her, eyes wide.

She doesn’t mean any harm.Josie crouched down and gently plucked the plant off her calf. She turned it over in her hands, trying to figure out what the hell it even was. She says she’s been waiting for me for a long time.

Zane stared at her like she’d lost it. Wait, did you just say she? Are you hearing yourself right now?

But a second later, the words died in his throat.

Josie opened her right hand. A glowing green lotus rose slowly from her palm.

The little plant didn’t hesitate, It hopped into her palm and sat right in the middle of the lotus, crossing its little roots like legs.

Zane grabbed his head, looking back and forth between the flower and Josie. He was totally shortcircuiting. YouitI don’t

even

Shh,Josie whispered, pressing a finger to her lips. She signaled Zane to shut it.

She stared at the little plant, her eyes locked on it. It looked like she was actually having a conversation with the thing, nodding along as if listening to a voice only she could hear. It was creepy as hell.
