Josie floored the gas pedal, tearing through the city streets toward the Northridge Iron Mine.

It was pitch black by the time she arrived. The abandoned mine was massive and eerily quiet, guarded by only two lazy watchmen smoking near the

gate.

She ghosted past them without making a sound, hiking up the jagged dirt path to the summit.

The peak was a wide, flat plateau. It was steep, isolated, and completely devoid of vegetation.

Perfect, Josie thought. Basic zombies can’t climb this. And no plants means no mutated flora to rip me apart.

She found her spot. But just as she turned to leave, her instincts flared.

The hair on the back of her neck stood straight up. Primal danger. She snapped her head toward the sky.

A blinding flash of light tore through the dark clouds. Thousands of meteors screamed down toward Earth, lighting up the night like a shattered galaxy.

Before she could process the sight, one meteor broke from the pack. It streaked straight toward her.

She tried to dive, but it was too fast.

BAM.

It slammed directly into her chest.

Josie gasped, swatting frantically at her jacket to put out the fire. But there was no fire. No heat. No pain. Just a strange, humming energy sinking deep

into her veins.

Right then, a translucent blue text box flickered to life in front of her eyes:

[Congratulations! You have awakened a TierSSS Elite Power: SIPHON.]

[System closing in 5432L]

Poof.

The box vanished.

Josie stood frozen, her heart pounding against her ribs. If she hadn’t trained herself to speedread in her past life, she would have missed it completely

The meteor shower.

In her past life, she was fast asleep when this happened. She missed the awakening completely.

The apocalypse didn’t start in three months. The trigger was tonight.

But this powerSiphon.

It meant she could steal someone else’s superpower and make it her own. A literal cheat code.

But there was a massive catch. She only had ten charges in total. And every time she stole a power, the cooldown timer would be brutal.

She couldn’t waste it on trash abilities. She had to be ruthless. She had to pick the absolute best.

And her first target was already locked in.

June.

A dark, icy smile crept across Josie’s face. She wanted June’s Spatial Vault. Let’s see how the pampered little princess survives the apocalypse without her magic storage space

Meanwhile, back at the Quinn house.

Whoosh. A heavy crystal vase vanished into thin air.

I awakened a Spatial power! It’s an infinite magic space. I can store anything in it! June shrieked, her eyes wide with mank grood

Arthur let out a booming laugh as he lifted the heavy, solid oak dining table with a single hand. Super Strength. Now I can finally protect my real family.

The three of them pulled into a tight, celebratory hug. Not a single one of them gave Josie a second thought.

Dad, Mom, listen to me,June said, pulling back, her expression turning dead serious. I’ve read enough novels to know what this means. The world is ending. The apocalypse is here.

We need to hoard food, weapons, supplies. I have the space, but we need cash. Now.

Arthur nodded, his eyes darkening with greed. I’ll play nice with Josie. I’ll trick her into mortgaging the house. She still has the three million dollar life insurance payout from her dead mother. We’re taking every penny.

Perfect, June smirked. We split up tomorrow. Dad secures the heavy food staples. Mom strips the pharmacies and clothing stores. I’ll hit the supermarkets. We buy it all.

They were so hyped, so completely obsessed with their brilliant plan, that they didn’t hear the soft click of the front door.

Josie stood in the dark hallway, listening to every word.

Looks like Sis didn’t get any powers,June mused, her voice turning cruel. In this new world, normal people are dead weight. She’s basically a walking
