Doomsday Revenge: Payback Time (Josie) novel Chapter 30

e world outside was rapidly descending into literal hell, but the local network was miraculously still holding on.

Thanks to modern, automated technology, the local grid was still running on autopilot.

The technicians in charge of the power facilities might have turned into bloodthirsty Undead days ago, but the Undead didn’t care about eating servers or cutting cables. The local network was still functional, even if the global web was completely trashed and silent.

For now, Josie could only pull up local news feeds and neighborhood group chats.

But no matter how many times she refreshed the main feed, nothing new popped up. Either the government moderators were aggressively scrubbing the panic from the internet, or people had been strictly warned to shut the hell up.

Josie knew better, though. From her brutal past life, she knew this eerie peacewas an absolute joke. Once the Undead fully hit Tier1 and their numbers swelled, the grid would truly go dark, turning every neighborhood into a violent, isolated slaughterhouse.

She was already on edge. Now some arrogant, keyboardwarrior idiot was walking right into her crosshairs, practically begging for death?

Fine. She wasn’t about to let him off easy.

Cool. I’m at home waiting,Josie typed back into the building’s WhatsApp group, her thumbs flying across the screen. Show up if you’ve actually got the balls, Gareth. Don’t be a pathetic little btch who’s all talk and no action from behind a screen.

That message was enough to set anyone off.

Especially a guy who was used to everyone kissing his as and respecting his statusbefore the world went to sht.

Predictably, Gareth completely lost it. He snapped back in the chat instantly: Fine. You wait right there, you psycho. I’m coming up there to teach you a fcking lesson!

Josie calmly snapped a picture of her front door standing wide open, and dropped it in the chat. Come get some.

Ten minutes.

That was all the time it took for the selfrighteous, furious prick to march up to the twelfth floor.

He started screaming from down the hall before he even reached her open unit. Josie, you little sl-

The foul insult died violently in his throat.

A heavy, razorsharp kitchen cleaver was already pressed firmly against his jugular.

Josie had been waiting for him right by the elevator banks, leaning casually against the wall.

After all, if she was going to bleed him out, she didn’t want to mess up her pristine apartment. This was the house her mother had bought, and she wasn’t going to let it get soaked in this idiot’s blood.

Keep going. Keep screaming! I haven’t heard enough yet!Josie was tall, athletic, and possessed a terrifying aura. Gareth was a short, soft, outofshape loser who spent his life at a desk. She looked down her nose at him, her eyes cold and deeply mocking. You’re too quiet now, Gareth! I can’t hear you!

Josiewhat the hell are you doing?! Put that knife down! The neighborhood’s selfappointed moral police felt his legs instantly turn to jelly, but his massive ego still tried to act tough. I’m telling you, military order has been restored out there! Turn yourself in now! Surrender to the soldiers, and maybe the judge will go easy on youDon’t keep digging your own grave!

I don’t want to! I’m not doing thr! Josir knew exactly how to trigger his entitled rage. What I do inside my own house is none of your damn business. You think you’re the only one in this building with a loud mouth?

Before Gareth could snap back with another legal threat, Josie didn’t hesitate. She swing the flat, heavy side of the meat cleaver directly at his face

SMACK!

She didn’t even put a fraction of her Awakened weight into the blow

But it was more than enough. Several of the moral police’s white teeth went flying violently out of his mouth, clattering against the marble floos

Blood sprayed everywhere, coating his designer shirt in dark crimson

Gareth never saw it coming. He didn’t think she’d actually do it. He didn’t think Josie, a twenty year old gid, was the type to just start swinging a heavy weapon without a single warning word.

He collapsed against the wall, clutching his shattered jaw, spitting blood and teeth onto the floor, his eyes wide with pure, agonizing shock

Get this through your thick, arrogant skull, Gareth: I’m the absolute last person you want to mess with in this new world. I don’t give a single damn if the military is downstairs or if the world is ending out there. If I want to hit you, I’ll hit you. If I want to slap you, I’ll slap you.

Josie flicked the bloody tip of the meat cleaver under his chin, forcing him to look up into her dead, terrifying eyes. This was just a polite warning. Next time you run your mouth, you won’t get off so easy.
