Chapter 393.
“You’ve guessed it all!” Kira Sinclair said with a bitter smile. “It really is like a soap opera.”
Josie Quinn nodded. “Pretty much. How did you find out?”
Kira hesitated for a moment before saying, “Can I just say…. I caught them in the artan
Josie couldn’t help it. She sprayed a mouthful of water right out. “Cough, cough, cough! Sorry, I didn’t mean to! Go on.”
“After I got to the base, I stayed with the kids. I was constantly worried about them, Kira continued. “Because I was so focused on them. I didn’t realize that the relationship between my fiancé and my best friend had become… dangerous. I remembered some laundry and changes of clothes over at his place, so I went to pick them up. I walked right in on them.”
“And then?” Josie was interested now. She pulled out a handful of sunflower seeds, handed some to Kira, and asked eagerly, You forgave them, didn’t you?”
Kira gave a pained smile. “I didn’t want to. But back then, my power was too weak. I couldn’t feed that many children on my own. I needed them to help me scavenge for supplies.”
“You had an Achilles’ heel,” Josie noted, nodding.
“Exactly,” Kira said. “I’d already grown attached to those kids. I’d raised some of them since they were toddlers. I couldn’t look at their eyes, full of trust, and just walk away.”
“In this dog-eat-dog apocalypse, they wouldn’t have lasted three months without me.”
“Those were living, breathing children! How could I just watch them die?”
“So, I gritted my teeth and endured it. For the sake of the kids, I forgave’ them.”
“But even though I forgave them, they never intended to return the favor!”
“One day, they told me they found a large stash of supplies but said they needed extra hands to carry it all. They asked me to come along.”
“I left the children with a neighbor and followed them to the supply ran.”
“But I never imagined they would wait for a chaotic moment to push me right into a horde of Undead….”
As she reached that part of the story, Kira’s teeth were practically bared in rage.
Josie laughed so hard she was doubled over. “Perfect! That’s the standard progression for this kind of story! What happened next?*
Kira sighed helplessly. “Luckily, I had kept the fact that I was a Super a secret. If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have known they were planning to kill me until a was too late.”
“Why did
you hide your power?” Josie asked.
r “I don’t know. My instinct just told me to keep it quiet. If I hadn’t, I might never have seen their true colors,” Kira replied. “There’s a wall between Norms and Supers. The same goes for low-tier and high-tier Supers.”
