They hadn’t seen salt in ages. A human couldn’t survive without it; they would lose their strength, suffer from swelling, and fall ill.

With this bag of salt, they wouldn’t have to worry about getting sick for at least a year.

Tyler carefully tucked the precious salt into his shirt, right against his chest, planning to surprise Chloe.

Just as he was about to stuff the rest of his haul into the basket on his back, he felt a sudden tremor beneath his feet.

A split second later, the surrounding buildings began to shudder violently.

Tyler’s pupils dilated instantly!

He was someone who had completed his K-12 education! He realized immediately what was happening

Tyler didn’t even look back at his supplies. He didn’t even grab his basket. He spun around and bolted back the way he came.

But he had only taken two steps when a massive jolt threw him off his feet. He slammed into the ground, the world shaking so hard he couldn’t even stand up.

“Chloe! Chloe! Don’t be scared! I’m coming!” Tyler’s scalp was torn and bleeding from the fall, but he didn’t even wipe it away. He scrambled and crawled, desperately trying to get back to her.

Meanwhile, back in the sewer, Chloe was thrown through the air by the violent tremor. She slammed into the stone wall, her head spinning as she struggled to regain her senses.

“Ty… Ty…” Chloe realized the danger. She scrambled to her feet, hands and feet working frantically as she tried to climb out.

The sewer walls began to groan, twisting and deforming under the pressure.

Just as the tunnel began to cave in, Chloe finally managed to haul herself out of the manhole.

Before she could even stand, she saw the already ruined street transform. The buildings on either side began to collapse like a row of dominoes, falling one by one until the dust blotted out her vision.

Chloe panicked.

She didn’t know where her lover was. She had to find him! Even if they were going to die, they had to die together!

“Chloe!” Amidst the chaos, she thought she heard Tyler’s voice.

“I’m here! I’m here!” Chloe screamed back.

Through the clouds of dust, she finally spotted that familiar figure.

Chloe scrambled off the ground and sprinted toward him.

But just as her fingers were about to reach his, the earth beneath her feet suddenly split open, creating a massive, jagged fissure.

Chloe felt the ground vanish. She began to fall.

“Chloe!” Tyler’s eyes looked like they were going to burst. He lunged forward, his hand clawing the air to grab her.

Chloe’s fingertips brushed against his, but she was already falling backward, helpless and terrified, into the dark abyss.
