Chapter 50
Winnie scrubbed herself until she practically glowed. Not a speck of dust remained.
She’d gone at her skin with a loofah until she was squeaky clean from head to toe.
Once she threw on the clean clothes Josie gave her and stood there, she looked like a completely different person.
Josie couldn’t take her eyes off her.
The girl was a total knockout.
While Josie was a high–glam bombshell with that classic retro–chic vibe, Winnie was a different kind of pretty–delicate, like a porcelain doll.
No wonder she’d been hiding her face from the crowds.
With a face and a body like that, in a world like this? Every man out there would’ve been hunting her down.
Damn.
I’m on it, Boss!” Winnie said, rolling up her sleeves and getting straight to work.
Josie set up a massive table outside and piled it with a mountain of ingredients, letting Winnie have her pick of whatever she needed.
‘Do you have any preferences, Boss? I’m great with spicy Sichuan, fresh Cantonese, savory Northern styles… honestly, I can do a bit of everything,” Winnie asked, her hands already busy kneading dough.
J
‘Anything’s fine. I’m not picky,” Josie said, grabbing a chair and kicking back.
You got it!” Winnie said, her energy tripling. “Just sit back and watch!”
It didn’t take long for the camp to fill with the mouth–watering scent of home–cooked food.
She had three stoves going at once.
One was stewing, one was stir–frying, and one was braising.
For real.
Just the smell alone was enough to make you want to scarf down three bowls of rice.
At first, Josie didn’t think she was that hungry. But as the scent filled the air, her stomach let out a loud, angry growl.
Given her height and build, she already burned through fuel way faster than the average person.
Add in the insane training she’d been doing lately, and her body was practically screaming for ‘calories.
Now that the smell of actual, high–quality food was hitting her, the hunger became unbearable.
Luckily, she didn’t have to wait long.
Half an hour later, everything was ready.
The massive table was fully loaded–nine dishes and one soup.
They weren’t plated like some fancy five–star meal, but they looked incredibly appetizing.
There was Glazed Prawns, Braised Pork Belly, Jumbo Meatballs, Chili Oil Chicken, and a pile of Spicy Crawfish. Then there were the Sautéed Greens, Savory Steamed Pork, Spicy Lamb Chops, Crispy Sweet & Sour Pork, and a big bowl of Tomato Seafood Chowder.
To top it all off, there was a massive tub of fluffy, steaming white rice.
It smelled freaking incredible.
“Give it a try, Boss?” Winnie said, wiping the sweat from her forehead. “I was short on time, so I could only throw this together. Next time, I’ll prep the ingredients properly and make you a perfect Beef Wellington.”
You even know how to make a high–end dish like that?” Josie asked, her interest piqued. “How do you know how to cook all this? This isn’t the kind of stuff you just pick up as a hobby.”
“Oh, my mom was an executive chef at a five–star hotel. After the divorce, I spent my childhood in the back of the house helping her. The manager was a good guy–he knew we were broke, so he let me wash dishes for some extra cash” Winnie shrugged, a casual smile on her face. The other chefs were cool. too. They’d show me the ropes whenever things slowed down.”

‘After a while, I just picked it all up.”
“What about your dad?” Josie asked. “He didn’t look out for you?”

“He did at first. He’d sneak me a few bucks here and there. But my stepmom caught him once and clawed his face open. I never took a dime after that.” Winnie looked down, fidgeting with her fingers. “Then they had a new kid, and I… I became optional.”
Eventually, they moved the whole family away. I don’t even know where. All I know is he didn’t want me anymore.”
So, it was just me and my mom.”
“She worked herself to the bone to provide for me. She got real sick from the stress…” Winnie’s eyes started to redden, her voice cracking.
Josie nodded.
Just another person dealt a shitty hand.
That was the thing about people.
You can never look too closely at human nature.
“Honestly, though,” Winnie added, “I think it was for the best that my mom passed when she did. This world is just too cruel. She never had a single moment of peace. Not once.”
Josie nodded. “I get that. I really do.”
Please, try it,” Winnie said, her eyes hopeful. “If anything’s off, just tell me. I’ll make it better next time, I promise!”
