Chapter 544.

“You really have gone mad!” Sylvia shook her head helplessly. “June, let’s stop this. I’ll talk to Malcolm and have him arrange a position for you. You can live out the rest of your life in comfort.”

June let out a self-deprecating laugh. “Comfort? How comfortable can an ordinary person be? Anyone can walk all over me! Malcolm is my stepfather-no, not even that. He’s just your boyfriend. How much do you think he’s really willing to sacrifice for you?”

“Wake up, Mom! The love of a middle-aged man is a depreciating asset.”

“I don’t believe in a man’s promises anymore. Not from the young ones, and definitely not from the old ones.”

“I only believe in myself. Power and strength are the only things that are permanent.”

“You think you’ve got Malcolm wrapped around your finger? Think again. Right now, he’s just keeping you like an interesting pet.”

“No pet is ever more important than the master.”

“As long as the pet doesn’t threaten the master’s life or property, the master can indulge its whims.”

“But the moment that pet becomes a threat, the master will be the first one to put it down, regardless of how much ‘love’ was there before.” June crushed the cigarette butt into the ashtray, her face twisted with cynicism.”So, Mom, I can only rely on myself. Do you understand?”

Sylvia was left speechless. As ruthless and cold-hearted as June was, she wasn’t wrong.

June saw through human nature, saw through the hearts of people, and saw the true essence of men.

If a marriage was equal, the two people could speak as equals. But if the relationship was lopsided from the start, there would never be a chance for a real conversation.

If Sylvia had married Malcolm when they were young, he would have treated her as an equal partner, someone to fight alongside. But she hadn’t.

Now, their statuses were completely lopsided. Malcolm claimed she was his only wife, but in his heart, Sylvia was just a vessel for his youthful regrets. Once he satisfied those regrets, he would become disenchanted with Sylvia. That’s when Sylvia would lose her value and be tossed aside.

June saw it all too clearly. That

was why she didn’t believe a word Malcolm said. She only trusted herself.
