< Chapter 570
Chapter 570.
Survival of the fittest.
That had always been the main theme of this world.
It was just that most people never participated in these struggles. They were too insignificant to even be considered “meat” on the table, so they remained oblivious to the world’s cruelty.
Nadia had been a high-level executive before the apocalypse; she had played this game before.
She had sat at the table as a diner, and she had been the one on the menu.
The only difference was that before the apocalypse, the wars were bloodless corporate battles. Now, the war was naked, direct, and far more/ brutal.
Knowing the outcome was already set, there was no point in stubborn resistance. It was better to find a way out early.
Josie was the best way out.
But now, that path was being blocked.
The man blocking Josie’s way was the fourth-in-command of The Peaks Base. He was a Tier-4 Terrestrial Super in charge of daily/ management. His name was Tyson Turner, though most people just called him Big Ty.
“Chief Quinn,” Tyson said with a greasy smile, blocking Josie’s path.”Care for a chat? I have some excellent tea.”
Josie wanted to see what kind of nonsense he was planning to spew, so she nodded. “Fine.”
“This way, please.” Tyson led Josie to his office and actually began brewing tea.
It made sense. This was an agricultural base. Besides grain, vegetables, and fruit, it was only natural to grow tea leaves. While they couldn’t produce high-end varieties, standard tea was easy enough. With Plant-type Supers, you could make anything grow.
Josie lifted the cup to smell it but didn’t drink. She kept her eyes lowered and spoke tonelessly. “Speak. What do you want?”
Tyson smiled. “I wanted to ask, Chief Quinn… once the bases merge, what kind of arrangements will be made for people like us? It’s not that I’m power-hungry, but I have men under me. I need to ask about our resettlement plan.”
“I don’t handle the specifics of resettlement,” Josie said flatly. “With this many people, it’s impossible for me to manage everyone personally. I’ll designate an area for each of the three bases. You will manage your own people.”
“However, once you move, you obviously won’t have as much territory as you do now. You won’t be able to do whatever you want.” “Space is limited. Everyone will have to live in cramped quarters for a while. Several people to a room. You’ll just have to make do.” “Once the crisis has passed and the trouble is over, we can discuss more permanent arrangements.”
Tyson’s eyes flickered. “So, you’re saying we’ll still be in charge of our own people?”
“No. You are only temporarily managing your teams. The actual decision-making power remains in my hands,” Josie replied. “Your Base Commander will report directly to me. The other two Base Commanders will do the same.”
Tyson’s eyes shifted again. He suddenly leaned in closer and lowered his voice.”Chief Quinn, there’s something I need to tell you!”
“Go ahead.”
“Our Base Commander… did she say she was pledging her loyalty to you? That she’d hand over all the resources for you to keep safe?” “Yes, she mentioned that.”
