Josie burst out laughing. “So, you’re basically just hitting me up for my Mobile Vault?”

Zane nodded, dead serious. “Exactly.”

“Aren’t you afraid I’ll just pocket the whole lot? Once it’s in my space, it’s mine,” Josie said with a smirk. “You don’t strike me as the trusting type, Zane. If you were, you wouldn’t have a secret stash in the first place. So, why me? Why the sudden leap of faith?

“Do I really have a choice right now?” Zane countered. He knew Josie. She was a wild card–unpredictable and sharp. With her, you didn’t beat around the bush or play mind games. You played it straight, or you didn’t play at all.

Attitude aside, Josie was actually the ultimate partner for the end of the world.

She was a total firebrand–blunt, honest, and she didn’t do “gray areas.” You were either her friend or a target.

“The Base and the military want your head on a spike. Same here,” Zane added. “We’re running the same race now. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Teaming up just makes sense, doesn’t it?”

“Fair point,” Josie nodded. “I just didn’t think they’d screw you over this fast. I figured they’d squeeze every last drop of usefulness out of you before throwing you to the wolves.”

She’d never been a fan of Zane before, but seeing him like this? He was actually starting to grow on her.
