Dumped Omega? Now Their Alpha King Begs at My Feet novel Chapter 41

Kai's POV

I watched her face, trying to figure out what she was thinking as her eyes locked onto the small glass bottle.

I saw the exact moment the recognition hit her. She didn't need to analyze it; the knowledge seemed to strike her all at once. One second she was observing, the next, she understood everything.

Then, her entire demeanor shifted.

The desperate, frantic energy she had when she burst through the door vanished completely. In its place was something far more terrifying.

A cold, quiet rage took over. It was the kind of anger that doesn't need to yell because it carries its own absolute certainty. She looked like an executioner who had just identified her target.

"That arrogant fool," she whispered. The words were so quiet I almost didn't catch them over the screaming hospital machines, but I did.

I knew exactly who she was talking about. Isabella.

Valerie's head snapped up, her gray eyes burning as she looked right at me.

"She mixed Silverthorn root with a dormant wolfsbane catalyst," Valerie said, her voice flat, as if she were reading a lab report.

"This isn't a restorative potion," she continued, her gaze never leaving mine. "She made a targeted arcane poison. It was designed for one thing: to react with the curse already in his blood."

The words hung in the air. This wasn't a mistake. It was an assassination attempt.

My blood ran cold as the rage churning in my gut turned to ice.

Just then, Dr. Albright rushed forward with a pale, sweaty face. He looked completely out of his depth, grabbing at the only solution he knew.

Valerie turned her back on him, dismissing him completely, and met my eyes.

She was the only authority in the room, the only one with any real power. I found myself trusting her completely.

"Tell me what to do," I asked, my voice a rough whisper.

She held up the small crystal vial that Isabella had sent. "Get everyone out of this room," she commanded, her voice dangerously calm. "Dr. Albright stays. I need a witness who understands what he's seeing."

The doctor looked like he wanted to argue, but a single glare from her silenced him.

She turned that burning gaze back to me. "And you are going to stand back and not get in my way. No matter what happens."
