Chapter 170
“Can I steal you for a minute?”
Something in her voice sounded nervous.
“Of course.”
I let her guide me away from the music and laughter, heading toward the quieter edge. Behind us, wolves still danced beneath the lanterns while music drifted softly through the warm night air. But the farther we walked, the quieter Emily became.
Now I was worried.
“Baby,” I said gently once we stopped beneath the trees. “What’s wrong?”
Emily looked up at me, then looked away again. Her fingers twisted together near her stomach. Asher went completely alert.
“Emily.”
She let out a shaky breath. “…I didn’t know how to tell you.”
Fear flashed through me first. After everything we survived, my brain jumped straight to the worst possibilities.
“Tell me what?”
Her eyes finally lifted back to mine. They were beautiful, filled with a mix of fear and hope.
“…I’m pregnant.”
Everything froze. I just stared at her, certain I had heard wrong.
Emily’s nervous laugh broke slightly. “I’m pregnant, Nathan.”
For a full second, I forgot how to breathe. Then a wave of pure joy hit me so hard it was overwhelming. “…You’re sure?”
Emily nodded slowly. “Yes.”
My wolf exploded with excitement inside me. Happiness crashed through every part of my body at once.
I cupped her face in my hands. “Emily, we’re having a baby.”
“Actually, I can feel two heartbeats.” She twisted her fingers together, looking at me shyly.
Twins. Twins. Holy shit.
A laugh broke out of me so suddenly I probably sounded insane.
“Wait–can still spin you? Are pregnant wolves allowed to spin? Why does nobody teach Alphas this stuff?”
Emily burst into startled laughter. “Nathan-”
“I’m going to be a father.” The words came out rough, full of disbelief and pure happiness.
Emily smiled weakly at first, but it faded too quickly.
I knew that look. Something was bothering her.
“…Hey.” I stroked her cheek gently. “Why do you look scared?”
Emily swallowed hard.
“Because what if…” Her voice cracked slightly. “What if there’s darkness inside them? The Moon Goddess said all that power from Silas and Declan… What if something passed into them?”
Pain twisted across her features as she wrapped her arms tightly around herself.
“What if we fail them?” Her voice shook softly. “What if we can’t give them enough love? The Goddess said that if they grow up surrounded by love, everything will be alright, but…” Her eyes filled with fear as she looked up at me. “What if we become terrible parents? What if one day they become-”
“Emily.” I stopped her firmly, making sure she looked straight at me. “You are the kindest person I’ve ever known.”
Tears gathered in her eyes.
“You went through absolute misery and still came back choosing love first,” I said, brushing a tear away with my thumb. “There is no universe where you become a bad mother.”
Her lips trembled slightly.
“And me?” I smiled faintly. “I’m obviously going to be an incredible father.”
That finally earned a soft laugh out of her. “Oh, really?”
“Absolutely.”
Before she could answer, I slowly lowered myself onto one knee in front of her. Emily blinked in surprise.
“Nathan…”
I gently placed both hands against her stomach, carefully and reverently.
I already loved them more than my own life. I really did. A lump formed in my throat, making it hard to speak.
“You hear me in there?” I whispered softly toward her stomach. “Your dad already loves you more than anything.”
I rested my forehead against Emilly’s stomach.
And if darkness ever touches them,” I whispered, my voice turning deadly calm. “Then we fight for them. Fogether.”
“Together?” she whispered.
“Together, my Luna.”
Behind us, the music had gone strangely quiet. Emily’s eyes widened slightly.
I turned my head and realized the entire group had apparently noticed us walking away and followed.
Marcus stood frozen, holding his drink. Poppy looked seconds away from crying, and Jessie already was. Kane and Blake looked deeply confused.
“…No way,” Marcus finally breathed.
Poppy smacked his arm. “OH MY GOD.”
Jessie grabbed Poppy’s shoulder. “I TOLD YOU.”
“You guessed five seconds ago!”
Liam pointed dramatically at Emily’s stomach. “Wait. WAIT. There are babies in there right now?”
