Nathan opened his mouth, clearly wanting to explain further, but Emma didn't give him the chance.
She grabbed her bag and stood up. "Is this afternoon's chemo session in the usual place? I'll go wait there, Mr. Allen."
Without waiting for his reaction, she walked out with her bag.
Emma gently closed the office door behind her.
Nathan stared at the door for a long time before his body slumped in defeat. He rubbed his brow, annoyed.
Perhaps because she had caught a chill from being in the water last night, today's chemotherapy was even more agonizing than usual.
With various monitors attached to her body, Emma stared at the ceiling, nearly passing out from the pain several times.
Even though she had just eaten lunch, her stomach felt empty, growling loudly with hunger.
Emma asked the head nurse, "Can the side effects of chemo cause hunger and drowsiness?"
The nurse, who was adjusting a needle, turned to look at her, puzzled. "I don't think so... I've never heard a patient mention those side effects before."
Emma's brow remained furrowed. The nurse's words only made her more uneasy.
She remembered the last time she and Evan had been intimate was a month ago. He had used a condom, so she hadn't worried about it and didn't take the morning-after pill. Now that she thought about it...
Emma shook her head, quickly dismissing the thought that had just popped into her mind.
How could that be possible? In her physical condition, how could she possibly get pregnant?
On the way back, she passed a pharmacy. Emma pulled over, went inside, and bought a pregnancy test, tucking it into her bag.
When she got home and opened the door, she was greeted by the aroma of garlic shrimp.
She had told Mrs. Alvarez she was sick and needed to go to the hospital for treatment every day, but she had never specified what the illness was.
As they were chatting in the kitchen, Evan came home.
When Emma saw him, the smile on her face vanished, the light in her expression slowly dimming.
"Sir, you're back! Dinner's almost ready."
Mrs. Alvarez was still smiling, completely oblivious to the subtle tension between the couple.
Evan gave Mrs. Alvarez a polite smile and said, "Thank you for your hard work."
He had, of course, noticed the change in Emma's expression. A pang of hurt and sadness hit him, but he quickly masked it.
