Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 107

Evan spent the entire night in the study. When he came out the next morning and went downstairs, he was surprised to find that Emma was already up, a rare occurrence.

Mrs. Alvarez hadn't arrived yet.

She had warmed a glass of milk and toasted a slice of bread for herself.

Evan pulled out a chair and sat down. An identical breakfast was set in front of him.

He glanced at Emma across the table. She was scrolling through social media on her phone with one hand and taking small bites of toast with the other. She didn't even look his way, seemingly unaware—or completely unconcerned—that he had come downstairs.

"Is there any more toast?" Evan asked.

He remembered hearing Mrs. Alvarez tell Emma yesterday morning that they were out.

Emma gave a noncommittal "Mhm," then added, "There were exactly two slices left."

One for each of them.

Evan nodded and said nothing more. He took a sip of his milk before starting on his toast.

It was still very early. The sky outside was just beginning to lighten, and it was quiet. The lights were still on in the house; if you didn't know the time, you might have thought it was around seven in the evening.

"Why are you up so early today? Do you have something to do?" Evan asked.

"Yeah. I'm not driving this morning. You can give me a ride when you head to the office," Emma said.

"Okay."

Evan agreed, and by unspoken agreement, neither of them brought up what had happened last night.

"Is there something important today?" Evan asked.

Noticing her heels were a bit high, he stepped forward and offered her his arm, afraid she might fall on the stairs.

Emma glanced at him and, for once, didn't pull away or refuse. She took his arm and slowly descended the stairs before saying, "Nothing too important. Should we go now?"

She hadn't directly answered his question.

Evan still had questions, but seeing that she didn't want to talk, he didn't dare press her. He simply nodded and walked out with her.

It was eight-thirty when they left.

Emma didn't tell Evan their destination or turn on the GPS. Instead, she sat in the passenger seat and gave him directions turn by turn.
