Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 128

"What's wrong?"

Noticing the girl's distress, Evan softened his tone and asked gently.

Melissa, her head still bowed, shook it slightly. Her long hair was loosely tied back with a hair tie, and the once-dull ends had somehow become dark and lustrous.

Because her head was down, Evan couldn't see her expression, but he could sense that she seemed to be crying...

"What is it?"

Although he wanted to shut the door and go back into his study, Evan didn't. Instead, he leaned down slightly, getting closer to her. He bent his index finger and gently lifted her chin.

By now, Melissa's eyes were red, brimming with tears. She looked up at him pitifully, and finally, unable to hold back, a large tear escaped and rolled silently down her cheek.

"Crying?"

The man's voice was husky as he asked. Melissa wasn't sure if it was her imagination, but she thought she heard a hint of amusement in his one-word question.

"No, I'm not..."

Even though she was clearly crying, Melissa bit her lip and denied it.

Her eyes and the tip of her nose were flushed red. Her full lips were also slightly pink and glistening, perhaps from her biting them, making them look particularly alluring.

Evan swallowed hard, his gaze on her deepening, like an ocean at night, with dark currents swirling beneath the surface.

Melissa shyly touched her nose and lowered her gaze, still not daring to look Evan in the eye. She whispered, "Will you eat with me, then? Please..."

With the girl pleading so softly, Evan no longer had a reason to refuse.

The two went to the dining table. Tonight, Melissa had made some dishes and a soup.

Because of the delay, the dishes were now slightly cool, with only the soup still steaming.

Evan sat down. Despite having no appetite, he was gracious enough to ladle a bowl of soup for himself. He didn't pick up his utensils, just sat there casually, watching Melissa eat her rice in small bites from across the table.

Two fingers on the girl's left hand were wrapped in a white bandage. Evan only noticed it now, but he didn't ask, simply shifting his gaze away without a word.
