Mrs. Alvarez glanced anxiously from the upstairs room to Evan, who stood before her.
“Mr. Cooper, I... I don’t know what happened to her. She just came home crying... I’m so worried, but whenever I ask, she won’t say a thing...”
Mrs. Alvarez spoke nervously. There was something else on her mind. She looked at Evan, opened her mouth to speak, but hesitated, unable to bring herself to say it.
“What is it, Mrs. Alvarez?”
Noticing her obvious desire to speak, Evan pressed her. “Are you hiding something from me?”
“Oh, gracious, Mr. Cooper! I... I wouldn’t dare!”
Mrs. Alvarez waved her hands frantically. She remembered her promise to Mrs. Cooper to keep the pregnancy a secret, and her heart clenched.
She was determined to keep her promise, but seeing the situation today—with Mrs. Cooper pregnant and all alone at home while Mr. Cooper was divorcing her—it just didn’t sit right with her. She felt she had to say something.
“Mr. Cooper, what I’m about to say might be out of line, but... I really can’t stand by and watch this happen anymore.”
Mrs. Alvarez clasped her hands together, her eyes filled with conflict and hesitation.
“Go on.”
For some reason, Evan’s heart began to beat a little faster. He had a feeling that whatever Mrs. Alvarez was about to say would be a bombshell.
At that moment, it was as if Evan’s brain just shut down. It took him a long moment to process it. When he finally did, he turned his head in disbelief toward the master bedroom upstairs, his heart pounding wildly.
“She’s pregnant? She’s actually pregnant?”
Evan muttered to himself, still reeling from the shocking news. He looked back at Mrs. Alvarez, his eyes filled with joy. “How long has it been?”
“A f-few days ago...”
Seeing Evan’s reaction, Mrs. Alvarez felt a wave of relief. It made her happy to see Mr. Cooper so overjoyed by the news, but—
“Sir, regarding the pregnancy... could you please pretend you don’t know anything for now?”
