With a smile that didn't reach her eyes, Emma looked down at the beautiful, young girl before her and said softly, “You’re so young. Why must you make yourself look so pathetic?”
Melissa froze at her words, but then her face crumpled again into a mask of tears. She clutched at Emma’s pant leg, still pleading. “Please, I’m begging you, Mrs. Cooper. Don’t do this to Mr. Cooper…”
It was too cruel. This was just too cruel to him.
The girl’s grip tightened, pulling her pants down. Emma frowned and took a quick step back. The movement was so abrupt that Melissa, who had been holding on, lost her balance and pitched forward, face-first onto the floor.
“Ah!”
Her upper body slammed into the cold, white tiles. Melissa looked up, dazed, a red mark already forming on her forehead.
“Melissa.”
Evan rushed to help her up. The flicker of anger he’d felt at her impulsive interference vanished the moment he saw her fall.
After hearing the last few exchanges, the onlookers who had gathered had pieced together what was happening.
They stared at Melissa, now cradled in Evan’s arms, with a mixture of contempt and pity.
“She’s so young and pretty. She could do anything, but she chooses to be a homewrecker.”
“Hmph, you don’t get it. It’s because she’s pretty that she can hook up with rich, married men. What else would they want from her?”
“It’s disgraceful. Absolutely shameless. She’s giving women a bad name!”
The whispers from the crowd were just loud enough for Melissa to hear every single word.
Nathan prodded the inside of his cheek with his tongue, and a second later, he reacted, swiftly returning a punch to Evan's face.
Thud!
Nathan was about the same height as Evan, but perhaps because doctors were stricter about their physical fitness, his punch landed with significantly more force.
“Holy crap!”
Daniel, standing nearby, stared with wide eyes. Unsure of the situation, he grabbed Evan, who was about to lunge forward again. “Evan, calm down! We’re in a hospital! Why are you hitting him?”
This was a disaster. If any paparazzi or busybodies were around and posted a video of them fighting online, who knew what kind of storm it would cause.
