The more Evan spoke about last night, the more his guilt showed.
Seeing Emma staring at him without a word, he sighed, moved closer to her, and whispered soothingly, “Emma, I was wrong. Please don’t be angry with me, okay? You can yell at me, punish me however you want, I’ll take it. Just please, don’t be like this.”
“Mhm.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Emma hummed in response.
Taking this as a sign of forgiveness, Evan joyfully pulled her into his arms, burying his head deep in the crook of her neck. He nuzzled her affectionately and cooed, “Emma, I knew you were the best, you’re the best…”
“Evan.”
“Mhm, I’m here, Emma.”
His chin was still resting on her shoulder, so Emma couldn’t see his expression, but she could hear the happiness in his voice. She said softly, “I’m hungry. Can you make me something to eat?”
“Of course! Wait here, I’ll go right now!”
Hearing that Emma was hungry, Evan immediately got up and left the room without a moment’s delay. However, he returned a few minutes later, this time holding a bowl of freshly washed green grapes.
“Dinner will take a little while. Have some fruit to tide you over.”
“Okay.”
Emma answered obediently, taking the bowl of fruit and placing it on the nightstand beside her.
But Evan didn't leave. He just stood there, smiling at her.
Seeing this, Emma had to prompt him again. “Go on, I’m hungry.”
“Right, right. I’m going.”
Evan hadn't used any protection last night. Given the state of their marriage and her current health, having a child was completely out of the question.
Although the chances of getting pregnant from a single encounter were slim, Emma chose to take the pills just to be safe and avoid any accidents.
By the time she came out, Evan was nearly finished cooking.
On the table sat a tureen of soup and a pot of rice porridge with lean pork.
“Your fever just broke, so I figured something light would be best. The soup will help you get your strength back.”
“Okay.”
Emma remained docile, accepting the bowl of porridge Evan handed her.
