The commotion in the hallway caught the attention of the two people in the office.
Emma was naturally drawn to drama. Hearing the noise outside, she couldn't sit still and decided to go out and see.
When she left the room, a crowd had already gathered in the hallway not far to her left. Due to the distance and the number of people, Emma couldn't see clearly what was happening.
She could only overhear snippets of conversation:
“Oh, I know that girl, from room 1507. I used to see her with a caregiver, but I don’t know what happened. Suddenly, she couldn’t pay the medical bills. The nurses have been chasing her for payment for a week now!”
“Really? Who’s the man behind her? Her boyfriend?”
“Boyfriend? No way. I’ve seen the girl and her dad. They don’t look like they have much money. But you can tell that man is rich just from his clothes. So they can’t be dating. Who knows what their relationship is?”
“So annoying, crying in the hallway like that. It’s hard to even get by with this crowd. What a pain.”
Listening to the chatter, Emma had a vague idea of what was going on, but she couldn't resist walking closer. Standing at the edge of the crowd, she finally saw the two people at the center of the incident.
Melissa was crouched on the floor in her thin sweater, with Evan standing behind her.
Sensing that the crowd was growing, and not wanting to cause a bigger scene, Evan hesitated for a moment before bending down and scooping the woman off the ground.
“Ah!”
Her body was suddenly lifted into the air.
Forgetting the tears still clinging to her eyelashes, Melissa instinctively wrapped her arms around the man’s neck.
