Emma lay on the bed for a while, waiting for her strength to return. When it did, she noticed someone studying her in the mirror.
She fluffed the hair that had been messed up during the procedure and shot the man in the mirror a playful wink. “What, Mr. Allen?” she teased. “Stunned by my natural beauty? Haven’t you ever seen someone as gorgeous as me?”
Nathan had seen more beautiful women, but he had certainly never met one who was more narcissistic.
The man, still wearing his mask, lowered his gaze, showing no sign of embarrassment at being caught staring.
After washing his hands, he pulled a paper towel from the dispenser on the wall and slowly dried them. Ignoring her earlier comment, he said calmly, “Since you seem to be feeling alright, you can go get some blood drawn for more tests.”
“Oh…”
Emma pushed herself up from the bed. Despite the rest, her body was still aching all over.
She took her phone out of her purse and, holding her lower back with one hand, started scrolling through a website as she walked out, heading for the nurses’ station.
But just as she passed Nathan, he snatched the phone from her hand.
“Watch where you’re going. Not at your phone.”
With that, Mr. Allen slipped the phone into her coat pocket and turned to leave before her.
*Whatever.*
Emma rolled her eyes at his tall, straight back. Apparently, being handsome meant you could do whatever you wanted, even snatching a married woman’s phone. Unbelievable.
At the nurses’ station, she happened to get the same young nurse who had helped her to the parking lot last time.
Emma had a good memory and recognized her immediately.
The young nurse, however, didn’t recognize her at first. It was only when Emma mentioned the parking lot that the nurse gasped in surprise. “You’re the lady that day!”
The young nurse scratched her head sheepishly. “Oh, come on, ma’am. The department head just asked me to deliver some files to the 22nd floor last time. I don’t usually wander off!”
Her flustered explanation made everyone around them burst into laughter.
Emma laughed along with them, not giving the nurse’s words a second thought.
After her blood was drawn, she returned to Nathan’s office.
Mr. Allen examined her test results carefully. “The situation isn’t looking very optimistic right now, but we’ve only just started the treatment, so don’t lose hope.”
“Okay, I won’t.”
Emma smiled. “I just never thought I’d hear words of comfort coming from Mr. Allen. It’s a rare occasion.”
