Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 43

Evan had just finished a meeting when he got a call from the hospital.

It was Melissa.

“Mr. Cooper, are you busy right now?”

The girl’s timid, cautious voice came from the other end of the line.

Melissa hadn’t wanted to bother him with a call. She had sent him a message late last night, but by this afternoon, there was still no reply. Feeling helpless and unable to hold back any longer, she decided to call and ask.

Evan gave a cool, indifferent “Yeah,” and asked, “What is it?”

He had seen Melissa’s message, of course, but he hadn’t felt like replying, so he had simply ignored it.

Hearing Evan’s frigid tone, Melissa felt a lump form in her throat, and she was on the verge of tears.

She didn’t know what had happened. All she remembered was that before Evan left the hospital the other day, he had said he would come see her after he took care of some things. But… it had been almost a week, and he hadn’t called or sent a single message.

“No, it’s nothing. I… I’m sorry, Mr. Cooper. I’m sorry for bothering you.”

Melissa stammered, her voice choked with emotion, nearly breaking into sobs.

Evan didn’t hang up. He listened quietly to the girl’s stifled sobs on the other end. The image of her watery eyes, like a lost kitten’s, came to mind, and his heart finally softened. His tone gentled. “I’ll come see you after my meeting this afternoon.”

After all, she hadn’t done anything wrong. His attitude just now had definitely scared her.

Hearing that Evan was coming, Melissa finally felt a little better. She sniffled and replied, “Okay, I’ll be waiting for you, Mr. Cooper.”

With that, she obediently hung up.

After the call, Evan stood in place, stunned for a long moment, until someone suddenly clapped him on the shoulder from behind.

“What’s on your mind, Evan?”

“Oh, the college girl!”

Daniel vaguely remembered her. “You’re back from Graymont City, have you been home yet? Shouldn’t you go see Emma first? If she finds out you’re back from your trip and not at home, she’ll be over here raising hell with me.”

Would she?

Evan asked, “Has she contacted you recently?”

Daniel frowned, thinking carefully. “Hmm, I don’t think so! It’s been three or four months since you two had that last fight, and she hasn’t called me once. I hadn't even noticed until you mentioned it.”

So it was true. She really didn’t care about him anymore.

Evan’s expression darkened at the words.

But Daniel, oblivious, continued on his own tangent. “Man, women are so much trouble, especially married ones. Wasn’t Emma great when she was younger? Such an optimistic girl, so full of life. How did she end up like this, always checking up on you, always so controlling? You two have been together for so many years, and it still ended up a complete mess!”
