Seeing Emma back from the brink, the relief he’d felt for a fleeting moment was instantly replaced by a fresh wave of anxiety.
Emma shook her head, still trying to put on a brave face. “I’m fine.”
But even as she said the words, her body trembled more violently, and her fingers, clutching Evan’s sleeve, turned white at the knuckles.
Noticing that something was seriously wrong, Evan frantically called for a nurse.
But Emma cut him off. “Don’t…”
“Not in the hospital. I… I want to go home…”
She gripped his sleeve, refusing to let go, her eyes filled with a pained, pleading look.
Evan dropped to one knee in front of the gurney and took her hand, his voice thick with urgency. “Can we go home in a little while? Just let the doctors take a look at you, run a full check-up. I won’t be able to rest otherwise.”
“No, please don’t…”
Emma refused.
“I want to go home, Evan. Take me home…”
Her voice was steady and she was perfectly lucid, but she just kept repeating that she wanted to go home.
Unable to persuade her, Evan finally gave in with a sigh of resignation.
By the time the car returned to the Heights, it was eleven o’clock at night.
After helping Emma bathe, change her clothes, take her medicine, and settle into bed, Evan quietly left the room, closing the door behind him.
Ms. Miller and Jason, who had rushed over, were waiting in the living room.
Seeing their boss descend the stairs, they both stepped forward in unison. “Mr. Cooper…”
Evan looked up, straightening his back. He tapped the ash from his cigarette and looked at his two most trusted employees. “Do you really think this was for no reason?”
It was the first time he had ever brought Emma to an event like this, and something this serious had happened.
The walkway was wide, the railing was high—how could she have just accidentally fallen in? It was too much of a coincidence.
Evan didn’t believe it for a second.
His mind raced through a list of enemies he’d made in the business world, but he couldn’t pinpoint who would target Emma.
“Keep digging into this. If you don’t find out who’s responsible, you’re both fired.”
With that final command, Evan stood up, took off his still-damp jacket to air it out, and headed upstairs.
Jason and Ms. Miller exchanged a look before quietly letting themselves out.
