Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 94

Evan didn’t answer. He felt as if a hole had been torn open in his chest, and an icy wind was howling through it.

Why had he brought Emma to that party?

To control her. To assert his dominance. To crush any hope she had of leaving him.

Evan didn't know how to explain it to his friend, how to tell him that the Emma who had loved him for eleven years seemed to be falling out of love with him.

The emotions he had suppressed for so long were finally threatening to boil over in the dead of night.

Getting no response, Daniel looked at his friend again. “Seriously, what’s going on?”

Daniel knew Evan well. He wasn’t an impulsive or reckless person. There had to be a reason he’d taken Emma to that party.

Dr. Morrison was still tending to Emma.

Evan turned and left the room first. Daniel saw him go and followed.

They went out onto the balcony. Daniel slid the glass door shut before asking again, “Evan, what the hell is going on?”

Evan was silent for a moment before asking absently, “Got a cigarette?”

Daniel frowned. “Are you fucking kidding me? You just told me Emma hates the smell, and now you’re asking me for one!”

Evan let out a bitter laugh and stared out at the dark night. “She won’t smell it out here.”

Daniel shot him a glare, then pulled out the pack and handed him a cigarette before lighting one for himself.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call her Evan’s anchor. Daniel had known for a long time that he and Evan were different. Even if Evan hit rock bottom and never got back up, Emma would still be there with him.

In an era where marriage was a transaction of cars, houses, and bottom lines, Daniel thought Emma was the last true romantic, a fool who had stuck by Evan when he was at his poorest and had nothing to his name.

Suppressing his astonishment, Daniel slowly processed the words, his expression still one of disbelief. “Are you kidding me, Evan?”

“Emma… How could she possibly…”

“I’m not kidding.”

Evan stubbed out his cigarette and looked down with a faint, humorless smile. “I couldn’t believe it at first either. After all, she loves me so much. How could she ever really bear to leave me?”
