Rupert tightened his grip just a little, and the guy started sweating bullets from the pain.
His girlfriend, unable to watch any longer, blurted out, “Sorry! It was me who bumped into this lady just now. My bad.”
Rupert shot her a cold look. “So, you do know how to apologize?”
The woman’s face flushed with guilt. She knew exactly who’d bumped into whom, but since Sylvia was alone, she’d let her boyfriend twist the story.
“Don’t apologize to me,” Rupert said, glancing at Sylvia, who was frowning. He paused a beat. “Apologize to her.”
The woman turned to Sylvia, looking genuinely sorry. “I’m really sorry. Could you ask your boyfriend to let my boyfriend go?”
Sylvia noticed the crowd gathering, eager for drama, and didn’t want any more trouble.
“Horseplay on the stairs is dangerous,” she said quietly. “Be careful next time.”
As soon as the words left her mouth, Rupert’s expression eased, and he let the guy go without hesitation.
“I listen to her,” Rupert said.
The other guy looked like he wanted to argue, but his girlfriend dragged him away before he could say anything else.
Sylvia was just about to leave when she felt Rupert’s hand tighten around her waist. She instinctively jabbed her elbow back, but he caught her arm from behind.
“Watch your step, sweetheart,” he said, releasing her arm as he spoke.
“Who are you calling sweetheart?”
“Well, you didn’t deny it just now.”
“You—”
Sylvia was about to snap back, but people behind them started urging them to move along. She had no choice but to head out first.
Once they were outside the movie theater, Sylvia pulled her jacket tighter and turned to Rupert, holding out her hand.
“My phone. Hand it over.”
“Don’t you have anything else to say?”
Rupert’s eyes were so intense it felt like he could see right through her.
She knew exactly what he meant—about people mistaking them for a couple—but she didn’t want to get into it. It was just some random drama in a movie theater. Time to move on.
“Nope,” she said flatly.
Rupert held her gaze for a second before handing her the phone.
Sylvia took it and started to head across the plaza to find a cab.
But before she could take three steps, Rupert grabbed her arm again.
