Encore of the Avenging Muse (Sylvia and Rupert) novel Chapter 638

The moment it slipped into the trash, Rupert burst out of the guest room and quickly picked up the bag.

He glanced at Reese, his face unreadable, so cold and distant it was like he was looking at a stranger.

Without saying a word, he turned to head back to his room, still holding the bag.

He even reminded her in a cool, detached voice, “The guest room’s all set. Try to get some rest.”

Reese gripped the table in disbelief, her eyes stinging as they filled with tears.

“Why aren’t you mad at me? I’m not that fragile, you know. If you’re upset or uncomfortable, you can just be angry with me.”

Anything would be better than this empty, emotionless silence.

It felt like she’d married Rupert—and his family name—but never really had his heart.

With a pleading look, she turned toward Rupert, hoping for something, anything, from him.

But Rupert just kept that same quiet, restrained look, his dark eyes steady and impossible to read.

“Don’t overthink it. Take care of yourself,” he said.

A moment later, the sound of his door closing echoed from the end of the hall.

Reese slumped into her chair, tears spilling silently down her cheeks.

She noticed the matching cups—one of them still had a lipstick mark on the straw.

She didn’t know how long she sat there before her phone buzzed.

It was a message from Kay.

Staring at the screen, Reese clenched her fist.

Upstairs, Rupert sat by the floor lamp, his head slightly turned, his gaze heavy and somber as he stared at the washed milkshake cup on the table.

Besides the straw, he’d stuck two knitted roses into the rim of the cup.

He stared at the flowers for a while, then pulled out his phone and dialed Chris.

“How’s her hand doing?” he asked quietly.

Chris hesitated. “She’s fine. Why do you ask?”

“She pulled away earlier but wouldn’t use any strength.”

“Pulled away? Dude, what’s wrong with you?” Chris snorted. “Her hand’s just started healing. She probably doesn’t want to push it.”

“Got it.”
