Entangled with the Mafia Don novel Chapter 22

Davina's POV:

The cold dread from Ezra’s office clung to me like a shroud, suffocating. His words, delivered with such chilling detachment, echoed in my mind: “Even if...” The implication was a physical blow, a violation that made my skin crawl. The VIP room. The client. The unspoken demand. I couldn't. I simply couldn't. Every fiber of my being recoiled from the thought, from the degradation, from the utter loss of myself.

I sat on the edge of my bed, the cheap fabric of the club costume still clinging to me, a cruel reminder of my captivity. My hands trembled as I clutched my phone, the screen a beacon in the oppressive darkness of my room. My gaze drifted to Nathan’s name in my contacts. He was the only one. The only one who had shown me genuine concern, the only one who seemed to see me, Davina, not just a pawn in a dangerous game. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat urging me forward. I had to get out. Now.

Taking a deep, shaky breath that did little to calm my racing pulse. I knew it was late, but I had to talk to him. I pressed call. The dial tone seemed to stretch into an eternity, each ring a question mark hanging in the silent air. And then, his voice.

"Davina? What's wrong?" His concern was immediate, palpable, a lifeline thrown into my drowning despair.

"Nathan," I whispered, my voice raw, barely audible. "I need your help. I need to disappear."

A beat of stunned silence on the other end. "Disappear? What are you talking about? What's happened?"

"He… Ezra… he told me… he wants me to… you know.. with a client… in the VIP room. I can't do it, Nathan. I just can't." The words tumbled out, a desperate confession, the shame burning my cheeks even though he couldn't see me.

Another pause, heavier this time, as he processed the unspoken horror. Then, his voice came back, firm, resolute, cutting through my fear like a beacon. "Davina… are you saying…?"

"Yes," I choked out, a tear finally escaping and tracing a hot path down my temple. "Yes. I have to get away from him. Please, Nathan. Will you help me?"

"Yes, Davina. Yes, I'll help you, I'm glad you want my help!" His unwavering commitment was a balm to my shattered soul. A fragile seed of hope, tiny but potent, began to sprout in the barren landscape of my despair.

*****************

The first rays of dawn, pale and hesitant, filtered through my window, painting weak stripes across the worn carpet. I sat at the small kitchen table, the pen feeling heavy and alien in my trembling hand. Before me lay a folded piece of paper, a blank canvas for the hardest words I would ever write. Leaving them. Mom, Lexi. The thought was a physical ache, a tearing sensation in my chest. They didn’t deserve this. They didn’t deserve the fear, the debt, the constant threat that now hung over our lives. But I couldn't stay. Not anymore. Not if it meant sacrificing every last shred of myself. I had to protect myself, and in doing so, I hoped, desperately, that I was protecting them too. From Ezra’s insidious reach, from the crushing weight of a debt that was never truly ours.

My hand shook as I formed the familiar loops of their names.

This was it. The point of no return. I took one last, lingering look around my childhood home, a wave of bittersweet memories washing over me – Mom’s laughter from the living room, Lexi’s cheerful humming from her bedroom, the quiet comfort of shared meals. I closed my eyes briefly, committing it all to memory, then opened them with a newfound, steely resolve. Slinging the backpack over my shoulder, I walked quietly to the front door. Each step was a silent prayer, each breath a desperate hope. I slipped out, closing the door softly behind me, severing the last tangible link to my old life.

The cool morning air of the alleyway was crisp against my face as I emerged from the back entrance of the building, my eyes scanning the deserted street. A nondescript car, a dark sedan I didn't recognize, was parked a short distance away. Nathan was behind the wheel, his silhouette a welcome sight. He saw me, nodded, and the passenger door clicked open.

I hurried towards the car, my bare feet pounding softly on the asphalt, and slid into the seat, pulling the door shut with a soft thud. I took a deep, shuddering breath, the reality of my decision, of this irreversible step, sinking in.

"You okay?" Nathan's voice was gentle, filled with a quiet understanding.

I nodded, a small, determined look on my face, my gaze fixed on the road ahead. "Let's go."

Nathan put the car in drive, and the tires crunched softly on the gravel as he pulled away from the curb, leaving the familiar streets of my life, and the dangerous shadows of Ezra, behind. The future was a terrifying blank canvas, but for the first time in a long time, I felt a flicker of something resembling hope.
