“What did the doctor say?”

“He’s doing well. He should wake up in a few days.”

Old Mr. Jackson was relieved. He walked into the room, looking at his eldest grandson laid up like that, and couldn’t bring himself to say anything harsh.

“Hubert, Ann–look who’s here!”

Tatiana stepped closer, a warm smile on her face.

Both kids turned and looked–their faces lighting up with surprise.

They shouted in unison, “Auntie Tammy!!”

Tammy spread her arms wide, “Surprise! Did you miss me, little ones?”

The two kids ran straight into her arms, clinging to her like glue.

Tammy was overjoyed. She kissed them both, one after the other.

Tatiana couldn’t help laughing–but she knew the kids had missed Tammy terribly.

At least Tammy seemed fine, like she’d moved past Lucas’s death.

It was Norman–usually so carefree–who’d gone quiet. He stood silently in the corner, his gaze drifting to Tammy, then away again before anyone noticed.

Those two…

She decided not to interfere. Matters of the heart had to be settled by the people involved–otherwise, there’d always be regrets.

Norman and Tammy had both come to visit Jasper, bringing plenty of fruit.

Tatiana put the fruit away and gently wiped jasper’s forehead with a damp towel.

For now, the room was filled only with the steady beep of monitors and the soft sounds of the kids playing quietly with their toys. The atmosphere was peaceful and hopeful.

That peace was soon broken by a noisy commotion of footsteps approaching.

“I said I didn’t want to come! Foster, let go–ow!”

A crisp voice came through, clear and obviously reluctant.

The door opened. Foster pulled in a tall young woman with delicate features but a face full of resistance.

She was dressed in a sharp pantsuit, but couldn’t hide her natural pride. Still, her eyes lit up a little when she saw Tatiana.

“Tatiana!”

“Rose.”

“It’s really you! I thought this jerk was lying again just to get me here!”

Foster opened his mouth, then closed it. He shot Tatiana a pleading look.

Tatiana understood. She walked over and said to Rose, “Don’t blame him. I asked him to bring you. It’s been a while since we’ve seen each other. And Hubert and Ann have been missing Mia too.”

Rose believed her, and even looked a little annoyed, “Mia’s still in class. Foster, why didn’t you say so earlier? I would’ve brought her!”

“No rush. There’ll be plenty of chances.”

Rose smiled genuinely, no longer bothered by Foster’s presence.

All in all, it was a decent start.

Tammy started telling funny stories from outside. Norman joined in, teasing the kids.

Foster took the chance to ask about Mia. Rose, for Hubert and Ann’s sake, answered with a few updates about her daughter.

The room was filled with light chatter and occasional laughter from the children. The rare, relaxed atmosphere chased away the gloom of the past few days.

Eventually, the conversation turned to serious matters.

Foster dropped the smile, “Outside, things are pretty much settled.”

Everyone looked at him.

“Liam,” Foster said the name coldly, “was confirmed to have left the country by helicopter the night of the incident. The last trace we have suggests he fled to a country with no extradition treaty with us. International cooperation has been launched, but it’ll take time.”

Tatiana’s hands tightened slightly. She wasn’t surprised.

That man always had a backup plan.

“What about the Langstrom family?” Norman asked.

“The whole structure collapsed.”

Tatiana’s voice was flat. There was sarcasm in it, but also a touch of emotion, Jack was the last and most important pillar of the Langstrom family. With him gone, the mess left behind couldn’t be covered up.
