Oscar’s eyes flew wide with shock.
A sound nearly escaped his lips, but Aren reacted before he could make it.
Her palm landed squarely over his mouth, muffling him completely. When he turned toward her in alarm, she raised a finger to her lips, her expression calm but unmistakably firm.
’If you make a sound now, they’ll discover us.’
Oscar nodded so vigorously she could feel the frantic motion beneath her hand. Only then did she lower it.
Without another word, they turned their attention back toward the corridor, straining to catch every word as the conversation continued.
"Your job is fairly simple, Nazario," Natalia said, reaching into her handbag and withdrawing a vacuum-sealed package of ammunition. "My men intentionally sabotaged the contestants’ name tagging. The staff won’t have enough time to fix everything before morning, which means all the ammunition will be laid out in the open on the preparation tables tomorrow."
She slid the package toward Nazario.
"Since your turn comes immediately before Jordan’s, it will be easy. Simply swap the ammunition prepared for Jordan’s turn with these."
Nazario picked up the package, turning it over in his hands. He rolled it across his palm, judging its weight before lifting a brow.
"Modified bullets?"
"Completely identical on the outside," Natalia replied smoothly. "The internal core is merely shifted slightly off-center. It’s almost impossible to detect, yet sufficient to destroy Jordan’s accuracy."
A faint smile curved her lips.
"And the most elegant part? The evidence destroys itself the moment the trigger is pulled."
Nazario continued weighing the ammunition thoughtfully before a slow grin spread across his face. If even his hands couldn’t tell the difference, Jordan wouldn’t stand a chance.
"And if these beauties do their job and Jordan still nails the first round..." He tossed the package lightly from one hand to the other. "That’s when I take the lead?"
"Correct."
Natalia’s voice remained perfectly composed.
"If Jordan somehow manages to survive the first round regardless, then it will be your opportunity to demonstrate your abilities during the second round. I’ve already arranged for several of my trusted men to advance alongside you."
Nazario let out an amused scoff.
"Pfft. I wouldn’t even need your men."
Natalia’s gaze sharpened, slicing cleanly through his swagger.
"I do not gamble with risk, Nazario. My men are yours to command. Use your numerical advantage wisely."
Nazario’s grin slowly faded, replaced by the same sleepy indifference he always seemed to wear.
’This woman is zero fun.’
’I actually feel a little bad for Jordan, having to marry a control freak like her.’
"And what’s the deal with you wanting the Lombardi heiress dead?" he asked casually, changing the subject as though discussing the weather.
Natalia settled back into her serene composure so completely it was almost unsettling.
"That is not your concern. I have arranged for a marksman to conceal himself inside one of the hollow obstacle structures in the final sector. Ariana Lombardi will be eliminated the moment she passes through his line of sight."
Nazario’s brow climbed higher.
"Are you out of your mind? Isn’t that insanely risky? If that guy gets caught hiding inside the course, every House will accuse House Marchetti of murdering another House’s heiress."
"No one will discover him," Natalia replied with absolute certainty. "He’s using the exact weapon and ammo variant issued to the course. It will look like her own bullet ricocheted off a steel target and struck her. An unfortunate accident. Once the job is done, he slips out the maintenance hatch, long before anyone arrives for her corpse."
Nazario narrowed his eyes.
’...It’s disturbingly airtight.’
The more he pictured it, the more plausible it sounded. Even so, a trace of uncertainty lingered.
"Still..." he drawled, scratching lightly at his cheek. "You sure you wanna pull this off, sis? She’s House Lombardi’s princess. If she dies during a Marchetti internal competition... on Marchetti territory..." He let out a low whistle. "Even I wouldn’t be looking forward to the political nightmare afterward."
Natalia merely offered an indifferent shrug.
"That is not something you need concern yourself with. House Marchetti has House Porto’s full support. Two Houses standing together against one House is hardly an unfavorable balance."
With nothing meaningful left to argue, Nazario exhaled through his nose.
"If you say so, sis."
A trace of amusement returned to his voice.
"Still, what a waste. I was looking forward to making fun of that Lombardi woman during the competition. Couldn’t you at least wait until the second round?"
Natalia answered him with a sharp look.
"And increase the possibility of failure? Please, Nazario. I will not tolerate unnecessary risk where my objectives are concerned."
Without another word, she turned gracefully away.
"I should return before anyone begins wondering where we’ve disappeared to."
The sharp rhythm of her heels echoed down the corridor until it gradually faded into silence.
Nazario watched her leave with one final look of open distaste before turning in the opposite direction, one hand buried lazily in his pockets as he wandered away.
"Crazy woman..."
Only after both figures had disappeared completely did the two hidden listeners finally emerge from the alcove.
Oscar burst out first.
"This is insane!" he hissed, his whisper coming dangerously close to a shout. "Did you hear all that? They’re actually rigging the competition! I’ve gotta report this to Father right now!"

’How are we supposed to prove any of it?’
’Think... think...’
