Jordan reached up and removed his earmuffs before setting them aside.
Then he reached for the blindfold, though removing it made no difference. For the moment, he still couldn’t see a single thing.
The first thing he did was feel the ground beneath him. The surface was dry, with no sign of water, and that alone brought a measure of relief.
He had long grown tired of being dropped into pipe networks over the years. With his large frame, those cramped tunnels had always been the worst environments imaginable.
Still, pipes at least offered concealment. He could stay hidden indefinitely if he wished.
This place was different.
The space around him felt vast and open rather than confined.
When he rose to his feet and reached outward, his hands met nothing in his immediate surroundings. There were no walls nearby, no low ceiling pressing overhead.
In a chamber this open, another contestant could easily have been dropped only a few feet away without either of them realizing it. He strained his ears, listening for the slightest movement.
Catching none, he held out both hands before him, then began walking through the absolute darkness. When his fingertips finally brushed against something, they jerked back in surprise.
It was thin.
Cold.
Metal.
Like tightly stretched wire.
Having endured this challenge countless times before, Jordan quickly steadied himself. He reached out again, this time exploring more carefully.
As he pressed his palm flat against the surface, he felt an intricate lattice of woven steel. Running both hands across it, he found the mesh stretching endlessly in every direction.
’Metal... wire...’
’Definitely chain-link fencing.’
’An entire wall of it.’
Keeping one hand lightly against the mesh, Jordan started moving alongside it.
He deliberately avoided pressing too firmly, trying not to set off metallic vibrations, yet even the gentlest touch produced faint ringing that carried eerily through the silent chamber.
Criiing...
The room was enormous.
Judging by the way the vibrations traveled through the metal, the wall extended a considerable distance. More than that, the chamber itself was likely an immense maze constructed entirely from chain-link partitions.
He continued forward.
Then suddenly—
Somewhere on the other side of the mesh he was tracing, the faint scrape of a boot twisting against dusty concrete reached his ears.
At the same instant came the sharp whoosh of something slicing through the air.
’Shit.’
’A sharp pivot of the hips — and a straight punch.’
’Someone’s directly beside me. They’re trying to punch through the mesh.’
Jordan dropped low without hesitation.
Exactly as expected, a violent metallic shriek exploded above his head as a fist tore straight through the chain-link fence, ripping the wires apart.
SHHHRRRIIIP!
Instead of alarm, excitement surged through him.
’You just made a fatal mistake.’
Twisting his shoulders, Jordan retaliated instantly. His own fist blasted through the fencing before driving straight into the attacker’s groin.
SKRRR—THUD!
"AAAAAAARGH!"
The man cried out in agony, staggering backward until his back slammed into another chain-link wall behind him, sending loud metallic vibrations rippling throughout the chamber.
CLANG—RATTLE!
The wall held.
The man did not.
He doubled over, clutching himself in unbearable pain, utterly incapable of retaliating.
Jordan didn’t waste the opening. He exploded into a sprint, putting as much distance between himself and the encounter as possible.
The scream alone told him it hadn’t been Nazario. It had been one of the Marchetti soldiers.
Whether the man belonged to Natalia’s faction or not, Jordan couldn’t tell, but he reached another conclusion just as quickly:
’That impact was loud.’
’Everyone nearby probably heard it.’
’With a maze this large, several contestants were definitely dropped into the same section as me.’
’I’ve got to buy time until my eyes adjust enough to see at least five feet ahead.’
Jordan ran.
He darted from one narrow lane to another, surrounded on every side by towering walls of chain-link fencing.
Every sharp turn ended with his shoulder crashing into the mesh, producing another burst of metallic rattling, but he never slowed.
After several minutes of running, the darkness gradually began to soften.
A faint crimson glow seeped into the chamber from somewhere ahead, revealing the vague outlines of intersecting corridors.

’Judging by our contestant numbers, Ariana’s drop point has to be far from mine.’
’I’ve got to clear this chamber as quickly as possible and find her.’
’But seriously, where the hell is Oscar?!’
’Isn’t he supposed to be inside already?!’
’A coin?’
’Displayed that openly?’
’This is definitely intentional.’
’They’re trying to start a bloodbath the moment someone goes for it.’
