Every eye in the warehouse turned toward the entrance.
Standing there was none other than Oscar, looking far more like a wounded young man than the boastful figure everyone was accustomed to seeing.
His face was drawn tight with pain, his posture strained, and one arm was wrapped protectively around his bruised ribs.
Behind him came Ricci and the armory’s quartermaster, both looking equally breathless, as though they had rushed all the way there.
Aren was the most shocked of all.
And, perhaps, the happiest.
The moment she saw Oscar standing there, relief flooded through her so intensely that she barely thought about what she was doing.
"Oscar! Ricci! You’re all here!"
She threw her machete aside and hopped down from the ring so quickly that several soldiers nearby flinched.
Jordan was the next to recover from the shock of Oscar’s sudden appearance. He immediately jumped from the ring as well and hurried after Aren, his machete completely forgotten.
"Ariana! Oscar!"
Together, the two of them raced through the rows of stunned soldiers toward the warehouse entrance like two streaks of lightning.
Aren reached Oscar first.
The moment she got close enough to see the way he was clutching his ribs and the pain etched across his face, her excitement vanished beneath a rush of concern.
"Oscar!" She caught both of his arms. "What happened to you? You’re hurt!"
Despite the decisive shout he had made only moments earlier, Oscar’s expression crumpled the instant he saw Aren and Jordan rushing toward him.
His eyes filled with tears, and suddenly he looked less like a young man who had just exposed a conspiracy and more like a child who had finally found someone safe.
"Ariana!" He practically collapsed into her grip. "I’m terribly sorry! I tried! I really tried to follow our plans, but Nazario ruined everything. He caught me and my men and captured us! But I’m here now!"
Jordan reached them a moment later.
His expression tightened immediately as he looked his youngest brother over, then supported him by the shoulder.
"Oscar! You were captured? How did you get out?"
Aren looked toward Jordan, guilt flickering across her face.
"Well... um... I’m very sorry. I know I said I wouldn’t try to find Oscar after we left the maze, but I was worried about him, so..." She hesitated before admitting, "I asked Don Caio to send a small team to search for him."
Oscar’s eyes widened as though struck by a revelation. He looked at Jordan, then at Aren, then back at Jordan again.
"Yo, hold on." Surprise spread across his face. "Wait a minute... Ariana, you already knew that he knew? Jordan told you?"
Aren smiled sheepishly.
"Yeah... Jordan told me."
Jordan gave a firm nod.
"I told her inside the maze."
Oscar looked visibly relaxed. Relief and gratitude crossed his battered face at once.
"God, I’m glad you did! I thought I’d have to keep my mouth sealed whenever I faced you guys."
He glanced behind himself briefly before adding in a hushed whisper,
"Anyway, that Leo guy was incredibly efficient. The men who rescued me have retreated to the spectator gallery now. They didn’t want to come here with me and attract attention."
Jordan fell silent as he processed everything.
His gaze lingered on Aren, a faint disappointment stirring somewhere in his chest.
’She keeps doing things on her own without telling me.’
’I wish she’d share more of what she’s planning with me.’
He pushed the thought aside almost immediately. There were more important things to worry about.
He gave Oscar’s shoulder a firm, reassuring squeeze.
"I’m glad you’re out. Did you have any trouble getting you out?"
"Not yet, I suppose." Oscar shook his head. "Those Sartori guys knocked out a few guards, but they were careful not to show themselves. It shouldn’t be a problem. If anything happens later, we’ll deal with it then."
Aren nodded thoughtfully, relieved that the rescue had apparently gone smoothly.
"I see..."
That relief lasted only a moment. Her brow drew together again as the larger problem came rushing back into her mind.
She leaned closer to Oscar and cupped a hand over her mouth, lowering her voice to a whisper.
"Oscar, Jordan and I managed to make Nazario confess his part in the ammunition sabotage. But we still need proof of Natalia’s own involvement. What happened to the sniper you captured? Did you manage to make him confess that Natalia was the one who arranged everything?"
Oscar looked as though he wanted to tear his hair out.
"Oh, God, no." He groaned, lowering his voice to match hers. "That guy is stubborn as a rock. Jordan and I hit him, kicked him, threatened him... We tried everything. He only confessed that Nazario set him up, which isn’t even true. He hasn’t said a single word about Natalia. That’s not going to help us."
Jordan nodded grimly.
"I’m afraid that’s the case. The man seems terrified that Natalia will find out if he talks about her. Apparently, Natalia already told him to blame Nazario if anything went wrong."
The news landed heavily on Aren.
For a brief moment, her gaze drifted over her shoulder until it landed on Giovanni, who stood with a group of Porto men nearby.
A knot of worry tightened in her chest.
Nazario had confessed. That much was undeniable. But accusing Natalia in front of House Porto without evidence or testimony was an entirely different matter.
They couldn’t afford to turn the accusation into a political disaster.
"Then that’s going to be a problem," Aren murmured, her shoulders drooping. "We can’t exactly make a case that Natalia was behind everything without proof..."
Jordan immediately caught the worry in her expression.
"Don’t worry," he said reassuringly. "I had the cleanup team capture all the soldiers from the maze for interrogation later. We’ll focus on making Nazario admit his part first. Then we’ll force the others to tell us what they know about Natalia."
Aren and Oscar exchanged a look.
