Chapter 3
There were no tears in my eyes.
No accusations.
Not even anger-just a cold, detached calm that could freeze the air.
My silence clearly made him nervous.
He hurried to explain, voice trembling just enough to betray his guilt.
“Ellie, don’t take this the wrong way. You’re… you’re a great girl. Really.”
“It’s me. I’m the problem. I don’t deserve you.”
“I just think… maybe we should call off the engagement. It’s better for both of us.”
“Okay.”
That single word fell from my lips-sharp, clear, and final.
Chadwick’s head snapped up, his face full of disbelief.
He had probably rehearsed a whole list of excuses and comfort lines, ready to deal with my tears and begging.
He just didn’t expect me to agree so easily.
“W-what did you just say?” he stammered, as if he’d misheard.
“I said okay,” I repeated calmly. “We’re done. The engagement’s off.”
My tone was so flat, so steady-it was like I was commenting on the weather.
“If you think we’re not right for each other, then there’s no point forcing it. I get it-no sense in trying to make something work that just wONT”
“You… you really mean that?”
His eyes widened, a flicker of irritation breaking through his surprise-like my lack of reaction somehow insulted his ego.
He wasn’t used to being the one walked away from.
“Yes,” I said simply, nodding. “I mean it.”
I didn’t bother wasting another word.
“As for the engagement gifts your family sent, I’ll have them boxed up and returned in a couple of days.”
“And the person who introduced us-you can handle that part yourself.”
Then I turned away from him and went back to wringing out my bedsheets, flicking the damp fabric and hanging it up to dry.
My movements were calm, unhurried-like I’d just swatted away an annoying fly.
Chapter 3
Chadwick stood there for a long time, stiff as a fence post.
He looked completely thrown off.
His mouth opened and closed a few times, but nothing came out.
In the end, he just gave an awkward little grunt, turned on his heel, and stormed off-his shoulders stiff, his pride dented.
Watching him leave, I felt nothing but relief.
No sadness, no heartbreak-just the lightness of finally dropping a heavy, poisonous burden I’d been dragging around for years.
The vine that had wrapped around my life for three decades in my last lifetime-choking the breath out of me-was finally cut by my own hands.
Of course, it didn’t end there.
The news spread like wildfire through the entire plant and company housing area.
Within two days, everyone knew Ellie had been dumped.
The gossip swarmed like flies.
Some people pitied me, saying Chadwick was a jerk who traded up the second he could.
But most just whispered behind my back, eyes full of mockery.
“Figures. A guy like him isn’t gonna marry some factory girl.”
“She should’ve known better. He’s got a college degree-she doesn’t.”
“Yikes. Getting dumped like that? She’s never gonna live it down.”
The fallout at home was even worse.
My mom got so angry she fell sick.
My dad called me “useless” and said I’d embarrassed the whole family.
My brother and sister-in-law flat-out told me not to count on them for anything ever again.
In their eyes, I’d just ruined their chance to cozy up to Chadwick, the oh-so-promising “college boy.”
But the harshest blow came from work.
I’d been next in line for Employee of the Year-a guaranteed bonus and a promotion track.
Then the supervisor called me in, his words polite but his meaning crystal clear:
“Maybe keep a lower profile for a while. Personal issues can reflect poorly on the department.”
Right.
A man breaks off an engagement, and people shrug it off.
A woman gets dumped, and suddenly she’s a scandal, a liability.

Chapter 3
Why?
Why should I be the one carrying all the shame, when he’s the one who walked away?
That night, I lay awake on my narrow dorm bed, staring at the ceiling.
