Chapter 7
The better my life got, the more that fury ate at him.
He’d look at me like he was choking on jealousy.
Couldn’t wrap his head around how the woman he’d tossed aside became someone else’s treasure.
Why the “golden boy” was now the one stuck in the dirt.
He was a ticking bomb-too scared to come at me directly, but always scheming in the shadows.
By December, the cold had set in, and the factory was chaos-inventory, audits, year-end reports all piled together.
Everyone was running on fumes, racing to hit targets before the holidays.
Thanks to my innovation and steady performance, I not only secured “Top Worker of the Year,” but was also nominated to speak as a representative at the company’s annual awards ceremony.
It was an honor-and a huge deal for me.
I was proud, but nervous as hell.
Every night after work, I sat under the lamp drafting my speech, while Benjamin quietly handled all the chores.
With him around, I could focus.
But right then, trouble found me again.
The company announced a full warehouse audit-a year-end physical inventory.
Nothing unusual about that, except this year management was cracking down on losses and “internal errors.”
They pulled together a cross-department inspection team-and of course, I was on it.
The warehouse was miserable-cold, damp, and reeking of metal and oil.
We checked thousands of parts against thick ledgers, hour after hour, day after day.
One night, near the end of the audit, something went horribly wrong.
Jessica, the new girl from accounting, and I were in charge of verifying a shipment of imported precision bearings-expensive stuff used for our export machines.
We counted three times.
Cross-checked the books three times.
And the result nearly stopped my heart-five full sets missing.
Jessica turned pale, voice trembling.
“Ellie, what do we do? Oh my God, this can’t be right!”

I froze. Those bearings had only arrived last month-perfect paperwork, all signed off. How could they just vanish?
We immediately reported it to Mr. O’Malley, the assistant manager overseeing the audit.
His face darkened as he flipped through the files, brows furrowing deeper by the second.
“This is serious,” he said coldly.
“We’ll get to the bottom of it. Someone’s been stealing, and we’re going to find out who.”
And then-of course-that voice came from the back.
“Well now, sir, I’m not sure it’s that simple…”
My stomach dropped.
Chadwick.
He’d slithered in without being part of the audit team, leaning against a stack of crates with that fake, smug grin.
Mr. O’Malley frowned.
“Chadwick, you’re not on this assignment. What are you doing here?”
“Oh, I just happened to be around,” Chadwick said, loud enough for everyone to hear.
“But I did see something the other night.”
“Don’t want to make trouble, but… pretty sure I saw Ellie hanging around the warehouse late after hours.”
“All by herself. Acting kinda… suspicious.”
A ringing sound filled my ears.
He was setting me up.
Every head turned toward me-some shocked, some doubtful, some curious.
Jessica backed away, wide-eyed, like she didn’t know what to believe.
“Chadwick, you’re full of shit!”
I was shaking, my voice sharp as glass.
“When the hell did I ever sneak into the warehouse?”
“I’ve been working overtime with the whole team every night! You’re lying through your teeth!”
He put on his innocent act, hands up.
“Whoa, Ellie, no need to get all defensive.”
“I didn’t say you took anything. Just sharing what I saw.”
“You know, just in case someone… wasn’t being honest. Those bearings are worth a lot of money, after all.”

That hit harder than a direct accusation.
He was poisoning the room with suggestion-making it sound like I was the thief without saying the words.
Mr. O’Malley’s expression grew grim.
“Ellie.” he said slowly, “how do you explain this?”
I knew anger alone wouldn’t save me.
Chadwick had planned this. He wanted to destroy me.
I steadied myself, met O’Malley’s eyes, and said, clear and firm:
“Sir, I can swear on my name and my integrity-I have never taken a damn thing from this company.”
