“You’re still making excuses for this brat?” Edwin’s voice boomed, cutting through the air like a gunshot.
The Alpha aura he let off was heavy-the kind that made the oxygen left the room.
Even as a high-ranking wolf, I felt the weight of it. It was suffocating.
He turned his lethal gaze onto Mortimer.
Under that ancestral glare, even the man who usually played god in this city had to drop his head.
“If you hadn’t been so spineless with your boundaries, do you think a random omega would have the nerve to pull this in front of your Luna?”
“Grandfather… it’s not what you think…” Mortimer started, but his voice was tight.
“Shut it!”
That was a Command. Mortimer’s jaw locked instantly; he couldn’t have spoken if he tried.
“Mortimer, the Davis family has bled enough favors and cash out of us to pay back that ‘life-saving’ debt ten times over. You want to play the hero on your own time? Fine. But get one thing straight-there is only one woman in the Blade pack who shares your soul.”
Grandfather looked like he was carved from stone. Every word was a lash. “You owe Vivian. Seraphina doesn’t. She’s under zero obligation to let you burn her dignity to pay off your debts.”
Mortimer looked at me, searching for something, but I didn’t give him anything.
No anger, no relief. Just a blank wall. He looked pathetic standing there, stripped of his excuses.
“I get it, Grandfather,” he finally rasped.
Listening to this old man take the bullets for me made something in my chest ache.
I’d spent years telling myself I was fine with the neglect, that I could handle the coldness with logic.
But hearing Edwin tear into Mortimer and lay my humiliation out in the open… it broke me.
My vision blurred. My nose stung.
Being defended-actually seen-felt so foreign it was terrifying.
Edwin saw Mortimer buckle and his face softened. He patted my hand.
“Sera, don’t worry. If those Davids try to walk back that apology, I’ll personally scrub them from this city.”
“Thank you, Grandfather,” I whispered, my voice thick with a tremor I couldn’t hide.
He suggested lunch, but my father shook his head.
“The lab data is at a critical stage,” Dad said, his voice back to its usual academic drone.
He looked at me, and for a second, the cold scientist was gone, replaced by a father who looked ready to burn the world down.
Edwin didn’t push. He knew the Silver Moon wolves-they lived and died for their research. “Fine. Mortimer, see them out.”
Mortimer stepped forward, looking almost desperate to be useful. “Sera and I will drive you.”
He looked at me, his eyes dark and pleading.

I wanted to say no, but with my parents and Edwin watching, I couldn’t exactly start a fight.
My father pushed his glasses up. “No need. My student is already downstairs with the car.”
“He’s right,” I said, moving before Mortimer could. “Don’t keep the lab waiting. Go.
I knew what Grandfather was doing-trying to trap us in a car together to fix the unfixable.
It was a waste of time.
Mortimer saw the look in my eyes-the sheer need to be away from him-and I watched the light in his face go out.
Once the room cleared, it was just me, Mortimer, and Edwin.
“Grandfather…” I started, looking for my own exit.
“Seraphina!” Mortimer snapped.
He stepped in front of me, using his height to block the door. He looked like he was vibrating with nervous energy. “He flew across the world to back you up. You’re not seriously going to just walk out on him, are you?”
He clenched his fists, his knuckles white.
